"I think ( opinion ) that the full back or wing backs are, in the current incarnation of the game, the key to getting behind teams who sit deep and beating the press. They call it ""an overload""ù these days and it's key to stretching teams but risky of course to the counter. You need your CBs and midfielders to be quick and potentially cover for them. But you need the whole team to be mobile to create that situation where you create the overload get in behind teams or create space for others in midfield others if you have 4-6 players to deal with in attack. It's why we struggled to open up Brentford ( and others ) who just sat 9 behind the ball and we just couldn't get behind them once. Like I say, need fitness and pace to make it work and players who can pass the ball accurately over short distances at least. Anyway, all academic as Moyes would never play such a progressive system. He would of made quick fullbacks a priority? Emerson might be one but Longelo is. They are naturally not so disciplined positionally when defending and hence often part of a 5 at the back. Again, Moyes would not want that."

"onsideman 7:26 Fri Jan 6 I don't understand football, no. I played fullback at county level, but that hardly qualifies me for anything. Fullbacks without doubt are massively important. Every position on the field is important. However, our biggest problem this year is scoring goals, and that is not down to our fullbacks. I never said we needed to buy a forward, did I? I mean, we do need one, as Antonio as back up is terrifying, but by the by, the reason we haven't scored enough goals is not our fullbacks, it's our useless cսnt of a manager's main tactic of setting us up with 10 men behind the ball, and pumping it long, and also he can no longer rely on our best attacking weapon for the previous 2 seasons - THE SET PLAY. We could have prime Cafu & Roberto Carlos as our fullbacks, and it wouldn't make that much difference, because as a team as a whole, we treat the football is like a fucking hot potato. One of our central midfielders, in his last 3 starts, his pass completion rate is 70%, 42%, and 55%. Read that and weep. I reckon we've got bigger fish to fry than worrying about our fullbacks being our main goal threat, but then again, I obviously know fuck all."

"I have to say though that when you see players like Rico Lewis at Man City and the kid Hall who came on for Chelsea yesterday and compare them to our highly rated youths such as Odubeko who's a reserve at Port Vale (having failed at Huddersfield) or Thierry Nevers similarly at Newport and Dan Chesters at Colchester, then you have to question our youth development too. Longelo and Ashby look like they should have been given a chance but time will tell"

The fact is that ours contribute fuck all offensively. As a consequence the team we are playing don't have to consider them a significant threat. "Definitely think Ashby and Longelo should have been given a solid run of first team games this season - probably in the Europa Conference. Don't know if that would have improved out dismal league status, though. I guess its more reflective of the fact that Moyes doesn't seem to trust that ex-Under 23s team (despite their success). Alese being allowed to leave permanently for Sunderland also seemed like an odd decision. We could perhaps have kept him and loaned him out to a Championship side this year, same as Longelo. We're not clever with these things, while the likes of Chelsea do it well and make good money from an extensive youth-and-loan regime. They do have cash to invest in it, though."

I've been posting ( spamming ;-) ) on here since 1997 and this is the 3rd time there has been pretty much 100% agreement on the problems and root of them ( Moyes / Sullivan). Other 2 times were identical with Avram and BFS in place of Moyes. But Moyes has had much better backing in terms of spending. He is failing spectacularly but only in the eyes of the fans ( well most now agree that's the case ). Meanwhile Nero (Sullivan ) fiddles ( with himself ) .
