"Free agency started last night and was pretty crazy some huge money being spent. Osweiler getting £18m a year for the Texans, leaving the Broncos without a QB, Giants have spent a fortune on good but not great players, Oliver Vernon has more guaranteed money than JJ Watt. lots more deals but cant be bothered to list them all."

Just reading some of the better informed background on Saleh and the Jets.

You know, he never attended a bespoke offense team meeting until this season? Which I find absolutely remarkable for a head coach. And that’s why he failed and got sacked.

I wouldn’t expect a DC to be a good offensive mind when stepping up as head coach. But you’ve got to engage with it. Sure, you might appoint your OC or assistant HC to call offensive plays and, of course, to coach your offense. But you have to make some effort to know that side of the ball - even if it’s just to understand the coaches, style and playbook.

I like Rob Saleh, and he will coach some exceptional defensive units again. But he wasn’t ready to be a head coach.

All the puff about the Palestinian flag, and rows with Rodgers etc, may have contributed a little to the timing of his demise. But he wasn’t up to the job.

Would not be surprised if Ulbrich has been temporarily promoted on the condition that Rodgers pretty much runs the offense. He already tells Hackett what to do.

This is why I didn’t want Rodgers, despite his talent. Douglas and Saleh were building something. Saleh just needed to get a grip on offense two seasons ago, and never did.

As Pete Carroll showed, though, you can come back from getting sacked by the Jets.

The Jets are great, because of the fans. But there’s so much wrong with the franchise that it’s not all on somebody who was obviously a struggling HC.

Saleh knew less than zero about the offensive side of things, or the people who can coach it. After three and a bit seasons. But he will walk into a top-tier defensive job.

Long way to go in this season, but it’s feeling like yet another write-off at this point. And we’re only 2-3.

It’s showbiz, though.

Yeah, Saleh has been sacked.

Too much to say, but he is basically an excellent defensive co-ordinator. Not (yet) a head coach. He has a lot to improve on - including taking responsibility for performances.

But there were also tensions between Saleh and Hackett (who surely has to go, too: he’s even worse), Rodgers (who will be gone at the end of the season), and the owners (who are THE biggest problem in New York).

Bad owners put the wrong guy in charge of the club. Where have us West Ham fans heard that scenario many times in the past?

The only “top table” guy who does a decent job at the Jets is Joe Douglas, the GM. And the owners have over-ruled him on occasions, too.

Somebody will pick up a top-class defensive mind in Rob Saleh. Just don’t put him in charge: he needs to report to somebody.

And on it goes in Gotham…

In one regard, though, the big decisions will be easily made for the Jets this year: all four of Rodgers, Saleh, Hackett and Joe Douglas (GM) will probably be out the door if it’s yet another losing season.

Rodgers will be out of contract and will possibly retire. Saleh will have had had four losing seasons out of four (if it happens), and Hackett is already so unpopular that nobody would care if he never returns from London. Joe Douglas is an OK GM and it’ll be harshest on him if he’s sacked. But he will be sacrificed to save the baby lotion vendors.

Saleh will build a Super Bowl defense somewhere, I’m sure. But he’s unlikely to be a HC when it happens. Like Todd Bowles.

TM - Sure, but the BIG difference is that Quinn knows enough about the offensive side to know what a good OC looks and sounds like. Saleh doesn’t - so doesn’t know how to help appoint one. He’s the head coach, yet knows as little about his OCs as the owners etc. It’s the culture of the club - but he’s an extension of it, and not somebody who looks like he can buck the trend.

In fact, this season Saleh has actively taken on a more hands-on role on offense, giving more “advice” to Hackett. They’re both utterly hopeless - it’s like the blind leading the blind.

I wouldn’t expect a head coach to be perfectly balanced on offense-defense. Few are. But when you’re not, you have to know your limitations and work around them. Famously, Belichick knew little about offense play-calling, but generally knew a good OC when he saw one - and appointed and empowered them. Saleh has only dug a deeper hole since taking over.

Saleh has not yet shown any progress beyond being very fine defensive co-ordinator. Yet his in his fourth season as HC.

That offense - with Rodgers, Hall, Wilson, Lazard and a lot spent on the line - should be significantly better than its awful performances. But it is so poorly organised and coached. With Saleh more hands on (because Hackett is so bad), he has to bear a lot of responsibility at this stage. This is his team. Four seasons in, his record says it all.

Yup. It’s an ownership/GM level thing. If those guys are no good then it’s never going to be a well run franchise. Drafts will be poor, recruitment will be poor, coaching will be poor.

SB, I don't agree with you in regard to him needing to have a knowledge of the offense. Dan Quinn has nothing to do with the play calling for us but he went out and hired great positional coaches, the best being Kingsbury (OC) and Anthony Lynn (RBs). I know Hackett had a good reputation from his Green Bay days, but I'm sure Lafleur was always calling the plays there and Hackett's time in Denver was a nightmare. For me it's all on the GM, he and Saleh need to go

Just checked the stats to make sure it’s spot on:

Rob Saleh is 20-36 as a head coach.

It’s time to move him on. Don’t care when, as this season isn’t looking good, but he can’t be Jets head coach next season.

Some people are just co-ordinators at best. He’s one.

I’d sack Hackett tonight. He’s a joke. Let him get his own flight home.

And I’d tell Saleh he has to finish the season with a winning record, or he’s gone. No new contract unless he wins: he’s had enough time, this is year 4 for him.

But more than anything, these owners have to go. Although that won’t happen. We make too much money for such a below-par franchise.

But it’s the same weakness every week, of every season, mate. So I’m afraid it’s no different at all.

The New York Jets do not know how to coach offense, and haven’t done for more than 20 years. Since the takeover by the baby oil magnates, to be honest.

We stayed in that game purely because Aaron Rodgers has been such a superb QB for so long: he’s in decline, but his nous made us competitive.

But we dropped easy passes - again.
The o-line was absolute shit - again.
The running game couldn’t get going - again.
We called the wrong offensive plays repeatedly - again.

Same story every season for more than 20 years.

Fair play to the Vikes - that’s a proper drilled team. Always a good sign when you’re more than the sum of your parts. You can get at them, but they’re strong. Deserved it.

The Vikes nearly caught Spursy at Spurs.

For a team that didn't bring a running game, I thought the Vikings gave the Jets too much respect defensively.

Close game now - purely because of Rodgers’ experience.

Every single completed pass in that scoring drive for the Jets (to make it 17-20) came from Rodgers’ innovation on his check-downs. Not a single pass went to his primary receiver on the play: which says everything about Hackett. That’s all on Rodgers’ calmness under pressure.
