It seems like we are going to have a season where we lose a lot, beat the shit and pull out a big result every now and then. Lop will keep his job and we'll finish 12th. Marvelous.

What's our best team, what's the formation? it's all over the shop, no idea what to expect at Forest now.

Well. Couldn’t make the game today and just watched MOTD. That was one soft penalty but you’ll take it against those cunts.

interestingly in their analysis of our first goal at the start of the move they are highlighting Alvarez at the back as to demonstrate how that move helped us. But in the back three Kilman centrally is 10 yards almost behind Alvarez and Todibo. you can see exactly how teams keep getting in behind us on the flanks. Acres of space behind Todibo and Kilman on either side. They can have almost a 10 yard head start if they time a run well. Surely you play in a line. That looks like madness. And we are so narrow as well with the full backs advanced and tucked right in.

Like many of you, I'm very underwhelmed by Soler.  In fact, when he was linked I wasn't at all impressed by his Youtube best bits video - and even Gary Breen would look like a superstar in one of those.

Tobido, Summerville, AWB, and arguably Kilman have been decent signings, but I'm not sure what Tim was on to sanction the rest.  The £20 million on the Brazilian teenager and another £20 million on the Kraut, yet refusing to pay £40 million for Duran was idiotic.

Yep, glad someone else mentioned those laughable 14 minutes added on time and they STILL couldn't get a result and score. Game could still be going on right now and they'd still struggle to score/win.

Fuck em and all that sail in em!

First half abysmal & looked like we had never met
Could easily have been 3 or 4 down
Second half much much better. More aggressive & Summervilles pace was crucial in an otherwise slow team as were AWB’s runs down the right
9 games in an Loppy seemingly has no idea what his best 11 is shown by having to make 3 h/t changes
Not sure where we go from here

Havent seen the pen replay but can you ever imagine that being given against Man U in the past?
Of course the media is all up in arms but if that had been given FOR Man U no one would have given a shit
Ref tried to help with 14 mins of injury time to no avail
Fuck ‘em

We were shit today and could have been 4 down at half time. We were lucky to get 3 points the same way we got lucky under Moyes last season playing similar shit football.

Hopefully Lopetegui can actually get the starting line up right at some point before Christmas, as this season - despite this win - has been awful so far.

Obviously happy with the win, but again we got lucky!

This is the 3rd time we have bounced back from a humiliation (Liverpool. Chelsea and Spurs) let's hope this time we can actually string some results together and improve rather than go back a step! And this early season jitters, nervousness or whatever it is can be put behind us, we still have big holes in midfield that needs sorting in January, fuck knows what's going on with the big Kraut as well, did see something about us trying to offload him but expect that to be bollocks,

But onwards and upwards

He's sadly knocking on and should really be used more sparingly. I think Lopetegui thought he'd be more of a threat and high energy levels battering defences like old but he simply ain't up to it week in, week out starting most of the time. He probably felt he could trust him after years of seeing him doing it before but father time has pretty much caught up with Antonio. Antonio was someone he clearly likes a lot of as he wanted him at Wolves when wanting new signings for them.

Ings however is the immediate answer whilst Fullcrock continues to slowly repair from gout or whatever the fuck the invalids got. He showed that in the Fulham away game and he really should have started games by now. I also think it would do Antonio a favour by coming from the bench in bursts of action for half an hour or so when defences are more knackered, not wanting to then face a fit and fresher Antonio tearing them a new one at the arse end of games.

This will all become more apparent as the season progresses though and it's nothing new for a new manager to take time to understand and assess who he can and cannot trust and at what time during the games as well.

As for the Football when we do start playing with the ball, I like a lot of and expected before he came in. There's a lot of easy on the eye, quick 1 and 2 touch passing during passages of play when it does click and we've seen it in 3 games running now vs Ipswich, Spurs 1st half and now at times during this match also. And the players seem to enjoy it too the more familiar they become used to it.

The build up to say Summervilles goal today or the slick passing leading to Souceks goal vs Brentford is exactly the kind of quality Football I wanted to see from a new manager and I did make everyone aware this is the style Lopetegui likes to instill in his sides once his methods are understood and established - Think back to that Sevilla patient 1-touch total Football goal scored...

Unfortunately for everyone that style of Football judt doesn't happen overnight, especially when the Club had forgotten what it's like to actually play with the Football for long periods, as opposed to usually being allergic to it.

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.news ... 56345.html

It takes time. And already we do see flashes of quality slick, 1 touch Football leading to goals.

Loving the Mancs meltdown on Twitter re the penalty, but I found it quite ironic that Keith Hackett has stuck his oar in saying it's one of the worst decisions he has ever seen. Not sure Tony Gale would agree!

A phrase that kept cropping up and which I myself often used during Moyes tenure was ‘we won/drew despite him, not because of him’. It looks to me as though Lop is following the same fortuitous path.
Even though I am still deliriously happy at beating those utter manc twats it was glaringly obvious that Lopetegui got very lucky today and whilst he made the right changes at half time he fucked up from the off. So as far as I’m concerned he’s on borrowed time.

Yep - absolutely. Very mixed game from Antonio today. I just think Ings offers more - the only bits Antonio is better at are pace and strength.

Misremembered when he came on exactly, you're right. But it did go to show he did bring him on and at just the right time where we score 3 minutes later and played his part in winning the decisive Penalty.

In fact he even subbed his so-called favourite Rodriguez after just half an hour in the 1st half against Chelsea 5 games in to a new season.

goose wrote: 27 Oct 2024, 18:22 The first half was terrible and I’d much rather he got it right from minute 1.

however, Lopetegui changed the game with the subs. Fair play for being brave and having the acumen to fix his mistakes.
Indeed. A sign he isn't stubborn. He is never afraid to change it either at half time, or to use as many Subs as he sees fit, as well as formation. He's still learning about what his Squad is and isn't capable of and as the season progresses, expect more of the same if it isn't working. A manager who actually likes to use much of his Squad, instead of predominantly favourites...

He ditched the overly ambitious attacking 4141 formation for a more conservative familiar 4231 formation.

He rightly ditched Areola for Fabianski, even though he's in the twilight of his career. As I previously stated, he needs to be able to trust his Goalkeeper a great deal with saves and distribution and Areola judt wasn't cutting it and killing us constantly conceding early and kicking it out or to the opposition far too easily. Longer term we will need to get in a much better, more reliable Goalkeeper.

Todibo would have started had he passed a late fitness test which resulted in him only coming from the bench (you can see the heavy strapping to his leg). So Mavropanos at the start couldn't be helped but did manage the situation well so he could at least get a half out of Todibo and it paid dividends come the end.

He took all of Paqueta, Antonio, Soler off at half time for the right substitutions to get us right back in to the game for Summerville, Soucek, Ings all making valuable contributions. Yes, I too would have wanted Summerville to start and I do blame Lopetegui for that, whatever his reasoning maybe thinking he could trust the vastly experienced Soler in Kudus place for such a fixture against Man Utd but it didn't work so put Summerville in early 2nd half. Soucek offered more protection and work rate in midfield and Ings offered more of a threat in their final 3rd.

So again, a mixed bag of good and bad but none of it is unsurprising to me to see Lopetegui understanding what the Squad offers the longer the season goes on.

He's one of the least stubborn coaches about and isn't afraid to use and try a lot of his Squad, even down to already playing the likes of Irving.

This Coach is going to need time whether anyone wants to accept it or not and after just 9 matches in the League we now have 11 points to build upon and in the meantime, for the 2nd Home game in a row we've just got beat Man Utd, so enjoy it.

It was good to see Summerville go over to celebrate with Kudus and Paqueta sitting together in the stands. He  has to start as does Alvarez.

Right now, Soucek is actually a step up from Soler as an attacking force, who may not ever make the grade. Paqueta has a job to do and it’s in a deep role; he’s proved he’s better there than Soucek.

Our defensive woes first half were left behind once we approached the game positively and with intensity in the second. Tobido and Kilman are the real deal.

I think a bit harsh on Soler. The old Fornals treatment innit. Bloke isn’t a left winger while he’s got a hole in his arse. He also doesn’t claim to be. I’d like to see him centrally and Paqueta given some much needed bench time. Think he links play quite well to be honest.

I would credit him were it not a quarter of the way through the season with him still clueless as to his best team.

As for Soler, I have seen nothing whatsoever to suggest he has what it takes in this league. His very first contribution this afternoon was to do a step-over dummy with no teammate behind him, gifting them an opportunity which they should have taken

Getting a pen (dubious one at that) in virtually the last minute of normal time against the mancs is unheard of. Enjoy tonight, and any encounters with any plastics in the coming days. That one was for all the shit decisions we’ve had to suffer against them over the years. Summerville is a real handful and will become a fans favorite as long as the manager starts playing him.

Ron - I was at the game too and was one of a few in my area saying it was a penalty.

Wils - agreed, more positives than negatives. AWBs run when he took out about 4 players really got the crowd going too.
