The Redknapp years

Post Django »

I’m sure some are aware of Robert Banks’ West Ham History YouTube channel. He’s got to the the 98/99 season with his 20min videos. That was my favourite time as a West Ham fan. Di Canio had just joined, we still had Berkovic and Moncur. Sinclair and Lampard were in great form, Rio was one of best young players in the league and Joe Cole was just coming on the scene. We had characters like Ruddock and Wright too. Well worth a watch for some lovely memories - great away win at Stamford bridge included- it all seemed a lot simpler then…

Redknapp was basically like a more attacking-minded Neil Warnock. A good man manager but ultimately tactically inept.

Only won the FA Cup with Pompey due to a freak year where 3 of the 4 semi finalists were Championship sides.

What has struck me most about watching this time is how good Frank Lampard was for us, I'm starting to think the criticism we had/have of him is harsh.

We had a cracking team, Sinclair, PDC, Ferdinand, Kitson, Berkovic and my favourite Keller.

Great days.
I always thought it was harsh at the time and recognised his quality as soon as he burst on the scene. It was only once he left the Club bad mouthing us was when I turned on the Fat cսnt.

And yes we did have a quality little Team that had it's deficiencies but a proper passing attacking Team that excited. Kellers goal at Derby always stick in the mind and the one at Spurs..

What fucked me off was the whole Hartson booting Berkovics head out of Chadwell Heath episode that then made Berkovic leave the Club so to retrieve it. The bloke should have retired with us and been a permanent linchpin of the side for years to come. Sadly weren't to be. His vision and passing ability was next level.

Agreed. Once Lampard was established he was excellent. Helped having lomas behind him doing all the donkey work.

He was the fella who wrote the Irrational hatred of Luton weren't he? Name rings a bell, unless I'm thinking of a different Banks.

Yeah sane guy. He’s written a few West Ham books. Videos are are pretty basic but that’s part of the charm for me,

This has all been done before Django, fella. Swindon Hammer use to harp on about them (what happened to him btw) I watched a lot of them then just got bored with it, but yea Robert has done a brilliant job with them.

I also have fond memories of Harry’s time. Did really well and got us to great position, where we mostly thought we were ready for the next level (ha ha) and then the usual two-bit owners, us, media portrayals of us combined in a massive failure in manager recruitment and we ended up replacing a decent manager with Roader to no where to over see an amazing squad bursting with talent.

With the players redknapp had at his disposal. He really should have won a trophy or 2 . Especially when you look at some of the clubs that did around that time. The fa cup quarter final performance against the yids in 2001 was one of the worst I've seen .  The players didn't look motivated at all . And that was an all too l common theme back then .
