Absolute cսnt if true. If the manager knows and wants a player get the player. Too much of this shit ends up with zero or paying just as much on subpar panic signings from the bargain bin.

Daniel Cummings nears West Ham transfer as Celtic to bank six-figure fee for prospect

Cummings made his first-team debut in the Champions League against to Aston Villa but is on his way out

Image

West Ham United are closing in on a pre-contract for Celtic ’s teenage scoring sensation Daniel Cummings.

The English Premier League outfit have opened talks and they are now at an advanced stage over a summer switch for the talented 18-year-old. Cummings is out-of-contract at the end of the season. The Hammers know they can land him for around £300,000 in cross-border training compensation. West Ham have been scouting Cummings for some time and he has stolen headlines with 26 goals in 27 games for Celtic’s B team and in the youth Champions League, where he has netted six goals in as many games.

The London outfit look to have stolen a march on their rivals Brighton and a host of English Championship clubs for the teenager who has come through the Hoops academy. West Ham have already raided Scotland this week to sign fellow striker Josh Landers in a six figure deal from Hibs this week.

Cummings now looks to follow his past south. The Celtic youngster made his Hoops debut during the week when he came off the bench in the Champions League clash at Aston Villa.

It looks likely to see another one of their top talents to England. Watford snapped up Rocco Vata last summer and Aidan Borland to Aston Villa last year.

For me he’s basically got a pass to the end of the season, given what he’s had and is going to have to work with in terms of the squad’s deficiencies, as long as it’s clear he’s working on and improving how we play, stamping his brand of football onto the players and doing the best with what he’s got available. Im prepared to give him a lot of time and slack based on what I’ve seen so far because despite some of the results there has been a hell of a lot of progress already.

Summer window and next season is the acid test.

Our current state is fragile.
Knives cannot be out for Potter, Shirley. We know who is ultimately behind the sub par signings and not going all out for the players that improve us. The problem transcends the manager(s)

Sir Alf" wrote: 01 Feb 2025, 13:47 In the last 5 years, no real problem with Sullivan's commitment to investing in the squad but its the fact that he has been involved in that spending every year since he got ownership 15 years back that is the problem. And, of course, that has been one reason why we have spent it so badly. Moyes legacy of a small, aged, slow squad for a 400 million spend was bad enough but we managed to take the second oldest squad last season and make it the oldest squad last summer.  Some achievement for another 150 million invested !  And Sullivan's meddling, usually picking the wrong players and managers because they happen to be available via agent sychophants,  is in direct contrast to his inactivity in the areas he should be involved in which is putting in place a long term plan and giving leadership by appointing the best staff to execute it etc.

Potter's biggest obstacle is rebuilding the squad but the longer term, enormous barrier to success remains our owner while he insists on involving himself in football decisions directly or indirectly via financial sign off.
As Owner, Sullivan has to sign off on player purchases and we cant get away from that, if he does not like the price he can kill the deal. Ultimately though, you don't see other more successful clubs haggle endlessly and publicly; if the player is a good fit they find a way and pay the price.  Where it really goes off the rails is if he listens too much to agents and not to the coaching staff. I sometimes think he and Sullivan Jr see the club as their own private game of fantasy football. Anyhow yes as long as he is around he'll be an obstructive rather than supportive force for any manager with ideas. Good luck Graham!

So what happens if Kilman gets injured and or Bowen?

It's clear as day that they are the 2 areas we are already short in without anymore injuries.
We may not go down but there are still more than enough games left for us to climb the table and even nail a Euro spot.
Pisses me off that the club are happy to write yet another season off.
We're always rebuilding, it's not an excuse, just poor leadership and decisions from Sullivan.

I don’t have a problem with Potter assessing what he has and working out who needs to go & who he can use
If that means he buys no one now but gets 5 in the summer that fit how he wants to play then so be it
For every Bowen bought in January there are far far more Ings

I don't believe Potter is a yes man, bear in mind he wasn't desperate for work and had plenty of offers to go elsewhere.

I don't accept that he would have taken the job if all he thought was that he was going to be Sullivans mouthpiece, I like to think he told Sullivan and Brady that this was how things are going to be and I have final say on transfers.

I'd be amazed if I was wrong.

They do spend money but is it spent where it should be on the players which are most suited to our needs or on the ones with the right connections and is this what Potter is talking about and refusing those?

yeah, a bit unfair to say they haven't put their hands in their pockets and stumped up for transfers in recent years.

I would think Potter is right, bearing in mind the previous January transfer buy of the likes of Ings, overpaid price, contract length and wages. A signing needs to be for the long term if not a short term loanee to cover until the end of the season.

There aren't too many clubs finding worthwhile signings in Jan window

I 100% expected new first XI players in this window. The lack of it just highlights the mess made by Moyes/Lopetegui/Steidten/Sullivan. Everyone running for their own targets.

Maybe its for the best that Potter now has the final say (if that's the case), so we don't end up buying players just for the sake of it?

I still believe it's time to bring in a striker at least, but if this means we are planning for a rebuild towards the summer, then bring it on.
