"Sport Bible New report on Lucas Paqueta's spot-fixing charges reveals how much of next season West Ham star can play There has been an update on Paqueta's case. Alex Brotherton Lucas Paqueta will be free to play for West Ham for most of next season despite facing spot-fixing charges. Paqueta has been charged by the Football Association with four separate instances of spot-fixing. The 28-year-old stands accused of deliberately getting himself booked during four Premier League matches. It is one of the most serious cases of spot-fixing involving a top-flight player in England, and could land Paqueta with a lengthy ban. However, the Brazil international can continue to play until the disciplinary process has been completed. According to The Times, the outcome of the process could be delayed until the end of the 2024-25 season or beyond. That is due to the complexity of the case; Paqueta's lawyers say it will take many months to secure all the witness statements and relevant information they need for their defence. That's because the case spans three countries - England, Brazil and Spain - and involves a large number of people. The charges allege that Paqueta got himself booked during matches against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Bournemouth over the past two seasons so that “one or more persons” could profit financially. The investigation that preceded the charges took eight months. In September 2023, Brazilian outlet Globo reported that suspicious gambling patterns were identified in Brazil relating to Paqueta being booked against Aston Villa in March that year. The bets were reportedly made using West Ham's shirt sponsor Betway, via accounts belonging to people linked to Paqueta. The FA initially gave the player until June 3 to respond to the charges, but his lawyers were granted an extension. English football's governing body has refused to put a timescale on the case. Paqueta has been linked with a move to Brazilian giants Flamengo this summer, but this latest development will give encouragement to new West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui that he can use the midfielderthis season."

This prick ha cost more goals than he scored or created and was a liability well before this farce.
Good players don't do that, 2nd rate showboats do.
Yes he’s frustrating. But all creative players do that. That’s why some managers get rid of them or try to tame them. Look at Joe Cole and his mourinho removed all the flair from him.
but my feeling is that the rest of the team need to step up also to make these flair players work. I find that Paq and kudus hold on to the ball more simply because there are never that many options for them when they get it. And that’s a management thing really. Our players don’t run off the ball much or move into positions for easy triangle like passes.
it will be interesting to see how kudus and Paq play in another team that is well coached throughout. I think if wil be like many ex West Ham players that were “shit” like Haller etc.
they will all suddenly do really well and us fans will look bemused,
why didn’t he do it for us etc?
well it’s the manager obviously.I'm not even going to get into the Messi, Iniesta, Xavi bracket of players.
Did LeTissier, who played for a shit Southampton with shit players spend every game giving the ball away and diving all over the place? Did he constantly fuck up and gift goals? Did he provide more goals and assist for the opposition than his team?
Of course he didn't because he was actually good and not an over rated showboat cսnt.
I can’t really remember letissier playing. So maybe you’re right on that. I just think the way West Ham have played especially under Moyes meant we were very defensive and any fuckups made by our forwards are closer to our own goal. Just how we have been setup. So maybe that’s why it’s more noticeable.
but let’s see how the play for other teams. I’m not convinced this can’t be coached out of them.

All that withstanding, this claim still fucked up both our finances and performance on the pitch. There's got to be a team of Payday No Win, No Fee lawyers gagging to take the case on. Ideal Sullivan partnership, that.
It's a reverse of the Tevez case; "They" claim Tevez - ONLY Tevez (and his goal at Old Trafford) - stopped us being relegated.
We could equally claim that the drop in Paqueta's form - entirely due to this case - prevented us from being in Europe again.
Goose/Ganders though, innit?
They'll have spent millions slamming shut any potential loopholes in this case - money that could have been better spent on the grass-roots football they're so keen to promote.

I'd love Paqueta to stay, especially if we get the 'good' Paqueta back, but I'd be surprised if he's not had enough and just wants to pack his bags and leave as soon as the book is closed on this one. He wanted to leave even before all this misery.
Unfortunately.

Re: Paqueta - Latest news
Good point, Stubbo, the WHW is quite the mix of characters. But we need at least one of these risky flair players and as Fraser says, to have two at once and sell them in the same window would destroy a little bit of the love for the team not just for supporters but also the remaining players. Bowen is going to want to run for those passes that might or might not just appear in front of his feet.
We've all been brainwashed into this 'sell everyone to raise funds' line, some players just can't be replaced no matter how much money you raise. And if you're looking to replace him, don't sell him in the first place.

Exactly that Gank, wtf is the point of going to football if there isn't someone who can do the unexpected that gets you off your seat.
Our two most talented skillful players (not our most consistent that's obviously Bowen) can't be sold in the same window and replaced by pure grafters who's ceiling is limited... But that's what I think will happen..

It's a combination of flair and risk. When they're at their absolute best, they can use outrageous skill to either score or set up a goal with a pass nobody else could have seen available OR just as likely they get tackled or that risky pass is intercepted and the opponents get the ball yet again. We love it, the risk is rarely worth the rewards but it's more interesting than loads and loads of passes like Manchester City do and more skilful than lumping it forwards like Bolton used to,and it's more entertaining than keeping the ball and not letting anything through like Burnley.
When the player isn't at his best, you get the version of Kudus that people are happy to see sold, you get the di Canio who sits on the floor demanding to be subbed and you get the Paqueta under investigation with the world on his shoulders stifling his creativity and having him burst into tears at being booked.
It hasn't been concluded yet but IF this is true and he's about to get off, he is the only player in the squad we shouldn't sell. We'll get the West Ham Way version of Paqueta back, we'll be frustrated and delighted in equal measures. I do t think there will be any compensation for us but if we get anything, chuck it all at Paqueta with a year extension on his contract and tell him to forget about a move for now, we'll sort that later, enjoy the extra money, play him bang in the middle of the pitch and tell him he can do what he likes, build a team around him with any new signings and watch the carefree Brazil international do his thing. Highest top flight assist stats in the world with a bunch of goals of the month thrown in too.
Then when the new-look Match of the Day have him on a showreel every week we can stick it in Sam Allardyce's ugly fat cold sore walrus mug along with all those other idiots I listed and tell them THAT is the West Ham Way.
Do not sell him if he gets off.
Totally agree with all of this (although think the WHW definition isn't 100% on, as players like Dicks also fit into the West Ham Way vision, and don't fit in the above).
But 100% don't lose this guy. He's quintessential to what we should be about. Before all this bullshit there's a reason Man City wanted him...he was both the most progressive, and the most hard working central midfielder in the league a that point.
It's insane that a guy coveted by Man City, should be deemed 'not good enough' to play for us. insane.

Completely agree that vast amounts of compensation need to be paid out now for loss of earnings and damages to all parties. Whatever we sell Paqueta for the FA ought to to top it up to the 85 million we'd agreed with Man City. Paqueta should go after them with everything he's got for compo for stress and ruining his career. This whole thing has fucked us but really fucked him. Poor bloke.
I think a lot of us on here have been saying all this for ages now. The fa have been busy trying to work out how to legally get themselves out of a compensation payout. The minute they requested his phone again I knew they’d fucked it. I think they were hoping if they delayed it all some new evidence would come out to vindicate a guilty verdict. But there is nothing they have that would not get them sued to pieces after an appeal.
Given that West Ham had to pay so much out to Sheffield Utd over the Tevez case I think this is all payback now. FA are going to have to pay out a ridiculous amount over this whole debacle.
