Can Potter and MacCauley pull multiple rabbits out of the hat, or will Sullivan 'try really hard' with all of them before grabbing a few aging bargains from Big Willie Salthouse?

He doesn’t look purely a ball playing midfielder to me. He looks like he can do it all. 

I’m not saying we should pay £50m but I equally don’t think we should sign the wrong player just because they are available at £25-30m. If the deal can be done at £35m, and it’s who the manager really wants, I think it’s probably worth the extra £5m gamble.

He’s 21, POTY in his first season in the Premier League. There is a real chance of a lofty ceiling if he is as good as those that watch him have said. It’s incredibly lazy to say “yeah but they were shit”. Was Joe Cole not worth signing when we went down? Or Parker the next time?

Hypothetically, if he moves in a few years for north of £60m, people are going to say “we could have had him for £35m, another fuck up” much like they are with Etikite, who incidentally was generally deemed a flop on his immediate move from Reims to PSG, until he recovered his rep at Frankfurt.  

£50m is not the right value fwiw, but I think that’s posturing. He’ll go for less than that.

Agree Russ, the Lille bloke looked powerful and runs for fun in possession and out of possession, covering and pressing at speed. Thats what we really miss since Rice left. 2 players like that and it would potentially transform us as a team.  

I would prioritise the no 17 from Lille too in other words. Get him in asap and pay the 20 million assuming we know that game against us was not a one off of course

I am not sure Fernandes should be our target. We have Paqueta and so a ball playing midfielder is not a priority. For me, our priority should be Makua who is powerful and dynamic. And available for £15m. Our engine is what needs an upgrade. 

If I was Potter, I would be saying to Sulli please just go out today and secure Makua and Geuye and we will be pretty much sorted and could actually turn out quite an impressive first eleven.

Hes creative, but usually from deep positions and thats why he sometimes doesn’t dominate games. You need to get him closer to the box. Last season, he tended to drop deep and play in front of our back line, picking up the ball from crap defenders because he was the only midfielder capable of beating the press.His passing is good, but he gives it away and will get better. But if hes going to play for a top ten Premier League team he needs to play at a higher speed than we did last season. We were utter shite last year and he was often our only good player. He sometimes got overwhelmed but because we had nobody apart from Tyler. Hes young and he can’t carry a team on his own. We didn’t help him.We’d be fucked if we lost him but it will give Still money to build a team. But hes far too good for the championship. I think we are going to get shafted over this. As your pal said, he is their best player, so they aint gonna let him go for £30m (which is probably what his actual value is). We need to be careful here that we don't pay for what he could be valued at in a few years. Personally, from what I have seen of him, I thought our early bid of £30m was pretty solid. Would be interesting to know what Soton's value is.

I was critical of the Kilman signing at the time, thought it was utter madness, mainly because the Wolves fans, to a man, were saying he was pony. I take note of stuff like that. I think the Callum Wilson signing is a shocker, for the same reasons everyone else does.

Signing a 21 year old who's just won his club's POTY in the Prem by a landslide, who is properly highly rated by those who have watched him regularly, for £35mil seems like decent business.

Slagging off EVERY single signing the club makes is easy work, which is exactly what you're doing. You can come back crowing about it if he's shit, keep schtum if he's quality and no one will mention it. Some of us are just trying to look at each signing on its merits.

Supporting this club is hard enough at the minute, I'm trying to at least stay a bit positive. I called this manager out when he went to Chelsea, never wanted him here, and I fucking hate our owners. But that doesn't mean I'm going to be a minge about absolutely everything, but fair play, you're sticking to your guns. Let's hope you're wrong about every single view you have, for the sake of West Ham, yeah?

That's the same amount we paid for Kudus and Paqueta, who were both internationals playing European football.

If you think he is better than both those players as investments I'm struggling to see why, but I don't believe for a second you do. You've just got trappy about him for the sake of being supportive,

I guess when your transfer strategy is so bad that you leave the most important buy until days before the season starts and then broadcast to the world how desperate we are to sign a midfielder, then you can't really be too surprised when selling clubs try to pull your pants down. We've done it to ourselves again. The business genius of Sully.

However, nobody ever accepts the first offer on the table, remember how outraged we were when the skullcaps offered a paltry 50m for Kudus followed by the complete capitulation only days later for a few pennies more? It's a negotiation. Southampton don't think they're getting 50m any more than we thought we were getting 85m for Kudus. However they're not quite as desperate or pathetic as Sully so we won't be getting a bargain. 

What I want to know is when is McCauley going to start earning his fucking money with his data (yawn) because it looks like he does most of his scouting on Match Of The Day and Sky Sports News. Where are the gems you cսnt? 

Assuming he and Potter are still in a job, the gems would likely come a little further down the line. Such is the state of the squad we’re having to pay decent sized amounts on established players to hopefully make an impact immediately. Caught in Sullivan’s interminable wheel of short sightedness. Best hope is they make a decent fist of it this season, ship out more of the deadwood and start getting in a few of these young players to start as squad members not required to drop right in and make an impact. We are so far behind we’ve got a lot to do to catch up with most other functional teams. We don’t even have a fully formed first XI, let alone squad. 

You could be right but Potter's decisions are not really helping his cause if longevity is his aim. Got one consistently high performing player, yeah let's play him out of position! Got fifty odd million wrapped up in two other wingers too - but let's not play with any wingers. Midfield was awful all last season - let's wait until four days before the start of the season to bid on a midfielder! We're terribly slow and injury prone up top - let's not prioritise a striker and then bring a really washed up one in eventually! It's been fucking mental behaviour. 

I hear you about (presumably) Bowen and/or Paqueta. He could play to his strengths a bit more also in terms of wide players. It's worth remembering though he inherited all those wingers rather than bought them plus the geezer he played successfully at RWB in his first game hasn't been seen since.

I really find it hard to blame him for us not buying a midfielder yet and also for Wilson. That's all on Sullivan and his mental behaviour. I am sure the club were relying on selling a few midfielders a lot quicker than we have- or indeed at all. But there is no way in hell Potter would have said if asked 'Yeah it's fine, just wait until the last week and then we'll move- I don't need to get the guy in in time to acclimatise and have preseason with the rest of them. Just get him in for the morning of the Sunderland match' No way. It'll be all Sullivan holding off as usual to do business as late as possible for whatever stupid reasons. You can't do much if the bloke who has to write the cheques isn't getting his chequebook out. Plus there's no way if told he can have one striker he goes 'Callum Wilson please.'

We should be more like Palace and find players in the £20m bracket. Surely this is why we are paying Macauley the big bucks? We’ve had our fingers burnt far too often paying over the odds for players. Sure, Fernandes might go on to be a £70m player, but right now he is £25-30m.
