What is the point of hiring a manager when you know he plays a certain way and then not doing anything to get the players to put the squad in a suitable state to do it?

This is the real issue with Potter and why it was never going to work out. Here you've got a manager whose entire reputation and the reason he stood out is because he produced the type of possession heavy football you normally only see at the richest clubs with the best players. Unfortunately, it's a style of play that relies on fantastic forwards if you want to score and win matches. Even in his best season at Brighton they scored just 42 goals - only 4 teams scored fewer that year. The season de Zerbi took over they scored THIRTY more goals than that.

The point is that we don't have the budget of a Chelsea or the scouting/transfer finesse of a Brighton to make his system even slightly workable. Add to that the fact that without the most skilful players in the world it's a style that's just an utter bore to watch and what you're left with is a team who won't entertain, won't win many matches and most likely won't stay in the league. And spending £50m on a couple of pacy midfielders won't change that even if we get them.

Well this mess is entirely on the stupid brainless fuckwits who employed a manager they knew they had nothing like the means needed to support in order to see any success then, isn't it.

In the context of a second or third midfielder brought in, early in the window alongside two proper young energetic players then I'd have been more than happy with him as well. Not as our only signing, on deadline day, which is seeming more and more likely now after the club gaslighting us all summer.

Will Brownhill by himself improve the midfield? Is it better than nothing? Ever so slightly. Is it enough? Nowhere near. Sullivan all over. Make us feel glad for feeding us shit after promising us chateaubriand. I will refuse to feel any gladness or gratitude if that's what we end up with, even if it makes us marginally less shit. Will I support the player? Absolutely if he gives it his all. This situation isn't his fault and it's a hell of a lot of pressure on his shoulders too. 

The embarrassment of everyone knowing we've needed serious reinforcements in midfield all summer combined with a major rebuild and players for the future, and then to come away with a 30 year old freebie from the championship. It's worth noting from an article I just read the teams being mostly talked about are Leicester, Sheffield United and Ipswich as his likely destinations. That is the pool we are fishing in if he's to end up here. With fucking championship sides. I don't know how Sullivan can show his face in the wake of such humiliating circumstances.

If Sullivan is making the deals and Potter is determining the very precise profile of players needed, it's no surprise that we can't make signings that improve the team without one of them suddenly becoming much, much more flexible.

Yup valid, but all we need are pacey box to box midfielders. (or an 8 and a 6 let's say) I don't think he's asking for anything that's particularly difficult or overly expensive to find and other teams are not having any problem finding and buying these players all around us. Without those players everyone can see we need, we are just going to get killed no matter what formation we play. His best bet is to probably just play Moyesball. Pack everyone behind the ball and hope for a chance on the break. If they knew we were headed this way, then why the fuck didn't they just hire one of those managers back in January? As absolutely fuck all seems to be happening - we tried bollocks incoming - are they actively trying to get the club relegated. Other teams with smaller grounds, smaller everything all seem to be buying players in the £30m bubble and yet we seemingly cannot compete there. We all know where the problems lie but mainly in the old and slow as fuck midfield being the main culprit and yet no new additions. Yet loaning Alvarez, scored the winning goal in the CONCACAF gold cup and won player of the tournament, rather than selling him, frees up wages, how does that help with actually BUYING players. All lies and smoke and mirrors I know but also why sell Kudus so cheaply, Spurs were desperate after Maddison's ACL and yet after turning down £50m, rolled over and had our tummies tickled for £5m more. An still no movement on any incoming at all, just shitty rumours that have no substance at all. Rumours on so many players such as McAtee, Luiz, Elliott, Fernandes, Ramsey etc all bollocks. I was very much against him being kept on but actually naively mellowed over the summer and also naively had a little hope he may be OK... Took 45 minutes of the season for a large dose of reality to hit me, and hit me hard. 

 

 

Nothing naive about it fraser, it's hope/desperation that your fears are misguided, you have to be like that if you're going over there.

I'm exactly the same every summer if it's a new manager in charge, clean slate and all that, try to be positive. Obviously with him we saw a bit last season, but you have to hope that was more the situation he walked into. Sadly not.
