Patriotism

Post Exiled In Surrey »

A flag should be about pride. About unity. About celebrating who we are. That’s not what’s happening right now. These England flags going up everywhere? That’s not patriotism. That’s marking territory. That’s sending a message. And the message is ugly: “This is ours. You don’t belong here.”That isn’t pride. That’s fear. That’s exclusion. That’s racism dressed up as tradition.Real patriotism doesn’t slam the door in someone’s face. Real patriotism says: we are strong enough, proud enough, confident enough to welcome others in. To share our values — values of fairness, decency, tolerance — the values that have always made Britain worth being proud of.When you turn the flag into a weapon, you betray it. You betray our history. You betray the very idea of Britain.Because the truth is this: our flag should say we belong together. Not you stay out.

I thought exactly the same for years, and then someone on the radio said that in the majority of cases, it’s because English is their second language. I don’t know how true that is, but to fair it does make sense.

This is a sideshow that the super rich individuals & institutions are happy for you to focus on.
Meanwhile they become richer & you become poorer.

Before anyone shits their pants, I’m not saying it’s not an issue but it’s an issue they are happy to distract you with.

I actually agree with Swiss on this point. The politicians are more to blame than those seeking free stuff and an easy ride. If the government (and those before it) made it less appealing to be here then less of them would come.

Btw I have no issue with flying our flag in our country as I would if a loads of Belgians fly there here in Brussels. Immigration is an issue but I'm not sure flying flags is going to get this government to change it's policies.

The other is to remember that a lot of these "refugees" are a result of Western policy on overthrowing non friendly regimes. Maybe don't put it on them but again the politicians and establishment that put them in this position.

Yeah those places like Venice, Florence and Rome with all their renaissance 14th and 15th century art is rubbish as are those horrible Alps and beaches. Don't get me started on that shit music by Puccini and Vivaldi or the crap food. They have nothing to compare with us.
And also of course those slim but voluptuous raven haired olive skinned woman. Give me a pasty fat ginger English bird any day.
Why are they passing all that up?

I think in the case of all these Flags suddenly appearing up and down my High Street, assuming Carnival Week hasn't arrived early. Samuel Johnson's quote on patriotism is a highly appropriate way to describe events.

That's not to say there aren't issues related to immigration that need to be addressed.

Nothing wrong with patriotism, it's nationalism you were referring to and it's not that.
I don't see how you you can be a patriot and not a nationalist.

Exiled, you don’t know what reasons individuals have for displaying the flag, it’s presumptuous to say it’s for this and that, it could be for any number of reasons.

Some might have put them up recently in a celebration of their concerns over the last 30 years FINALLY being taken as a serious consideration, by our ruling classes, instead of being subject to being called racist, generalised about, patronised and smeared with pathetic and lazy stereotypes.

And I still don’t agree with it, even if that is the case, as they are meant to be escaping to a safe country, irrespective of what language is or isn’t spoken.

A flag is a symlink to a vast dataset of history, meaning and belief. You dont need it much if you have a pluralist government governing on behalf of the people who believe in the dataset. Once the governing body starts to reject those beliefs and imports many others displaying the flag is a very simple way of reminding them who they are responsible to.

Irrespective of where you were born and what flavour passport you have, the best country is one that delivers to most of your needs and scorns/prohibits most of what you dislike.

If you only know England/the UK then your choice is easy.

If you've experienced life (not a package holiday or running through as many countries as you can during your gap year), you can then start to decide which nation is best for you (fuck everybody else, they can make their own choices based on their own needs and wants).

My kids have lived in the Netherlands since 1998, but they are fierce UK patriots - more so, even than me, and I'm immensely proud of the (part of the) country I grew up in.

I don't think it is territory marking. I think its more a message to the Government to not forget the people that live here. What are you doing for us? What are you doing for our homeless, elderly and vulnerable? We are English and British. Don't fucking forget that. .

Indeed. If I lived in a shithole and could see there was a green and pleasant land managed by a lanyard class that hates itself and many of its people who are welcoming to the extreme I would make the effort to travel to that place of milk and honey.
