Far too much stock is put into the fact that Sullivan has an economics degree from LSE so, therefore must be very clever.
Total Bollocks.
Economists tend to fall into three types. Strategists who can be brilliant but sometimes do not get the opportunities so end up nowhere. Clever.
Opportunists who luck into situations and make a lot of money. Lucky.
Opportunists who have a strategic bent who then maximise the benefits of their opportunities, they can make money comparable to a small nation. Very Clever.
Oh, and some of them lie about their credential and go into politics.
Sullivan is an opportunist. He was lucky/ thick skinned enough to get into porn when it was mainly paper and film, moved on to property when the internet entered the porn market. A strategist would have seen the exponential financial rewards that the internet offered the porn market, Sullivan retrenched to the safer world of property. Profitable for sure but not like being on the ground floor of the internet boom.
He took that property model to Birmingham and West Ham and made money out of it. Could he have made more?
Yes.
I have no doubt that Sullivan has been, and continues to be, massively successful in taking his opportunities. But, he is limited. He only operates in an analogue, antiquated manner, short term and little strategy beyond turning a deal.
A clever economist would take the opportunity of West Ham as a football club and make it the best it could possibly be to maximise it's value in any sale. If, as seems plausible, the intention all along was to use the club as a vehicle to purchase the real estate on which the Stadium stands as a property deal, probably trying to emulate the O2 arena deal but for offices and housing rather than just an event venue then a better relationship with the landowners would be nurtured to maximise his profits.
As it is the football club appears to be a personal plaything which Sullivan values at a far greater amount than the assets warrant. The relationships with key landowners and stakeholders so poor that they barely speak, let alone entertain letting Sullivan and Co. have the land for a knock down price.
So yes, he has made a lot of money. He has made money out of his opportunities to the extent of becoming a billionaire post selling Upton Park.
But, if he was really that clever then the club would be better run to the extent that it was attractive at top dollar to investors, even near his perception of it's value; a credible structure would exist to facilitate ongoing team success and minimise patron protest which draws negative attention and devalues the asset. A plan would be in place to acquire the stadium and a development plan for the stadium (even relocation), training facilities, etc. whilst maximising the real estate value. The stadium sits on a site that could, very easily, accommodate more development.
Running the club like a circus; taking annual payday loans to pay off last years loans; pleading poverty despite the lofty wealth of the board; making repeated bad business decisions in key appointments and annoying landowners and supporters alike is not very clever.
It smacks of "doing it because I can."
Yes, he already has, and will make more than most of us can even dream of when he does fuck off but if he was truly that smart, his wealth would be eye watering.

The best outcome from the protests is Sullivan selling up and jogging on but Hammers United and FAB have been realistic enough to say that they have no confidence in their day to day running of the club ( short term, no plan or vision, appalling recruitment and wasting millions as a result etc etc ) so would settle for Sullivan and Brady resigning from those roles and implementing a proper, autonomous CEO and DOF ( and other supporting roles that every other top flight club in Europe has) . All part of a proper infrastructure for the long term. Target professional people who have experience and a track record of success defining, implementing a strategy, philosophy for the next 5 - 10 years.

With enough pressure and at Sullivan’s age, it has a more realitic chance of happening. Get it right and the value of the club increases so a “win win”.  Sullivan wont sell and has materially over valued the club. Allied to having no ground and ability to generate revenues from it makes us unattractive to investors etc.

The other problem of having an awful, incompetent, owner with narcissistic traits is that he and his family see the club as their hobby getting involved with agents etc. So while I think aiming to get Sullivan to step away from daily running of the club is more of a realistic aim, even that is made harder by a man and his family who fill their days pretending to run a football club.

The article contains the quote:

“I think it’s time they sell up. I think David Sullivan and Karren Brady are focused on making money more than they are focused on doing what is best for West Ham,” said Hutchison.

Probably true and the crux of the matter.  If he can make more money out of West Ham than elsewhere, why would he sell?

As Steinberg points out, West Ham are run like a19th century business with one man calling the shots. A mill owner back in Victorian times. The club is a play thing for him and his boys who’s lives are empty . The downside of extreme wealth. No purpose.

That said, above this Sullivan’s primary concern, and why he bought the clib, was financial.  Its an asset and he saw getting a rented stadium and being able to sell UP as the prize. Gets the profit of selling the old stadium and increases the value of the club via the rented stadium.  He and the shareholders have made many millions in asset value from West Ham over the last 10 years and will cash in at some point.  The protests will hopefully influence this but if not the demand for Sullivan and Brady to step aside from day to day running of the club makes a compelling argument.  Very hard for the media to argue they (BS) have done anything but a very poor job other than increasing their wealth .

A stadium not fit for purpose that has now become a millstone that prevents us growing our revenue via commercial deals thru events, naming rights, hotel infrastructure etc. Ironic that Sullivan, Gold and Brady cited the stadium move as essential to grow revenues and compete with the rich 6? It now prevents us doing just that. Spurs getting 100-150 million more in commercial revenues than us.

Sullivan making recruitment decisions, influencing players the club buy is just absurd. No footballing CEO or Head of Football Operations, no DOF the only club ( aside from Fulham) without these kinds of professionals.  No long term plan, sub standard training facilities, calling fans customers, disrespecting history via the badge naming change all part of getting tourists in to change the match day demographic, increase ticket revenues, quell fan resistance. No understanding that it would destroy the atmosphere in a athletics stadium which already felt half dead.

”No more BS”.

He may be far more wealthy but the way Sullivan behaves has always reminded me of the Oyston's at Blackpool...but they didn't have an economics degree between them. Another shocking saga if you read about what they did over the decades

He does have academic qualifications and from a very prestigious university to boot or so we're constantly reminded - but it's like he can't help but indulge himself in that very same kind of outlook and behaviour that those bunch of scallies did by the seaside.

It's mental... that's what it is.

Going to be hard for him to justify his position as chairman if Nuno doesn’t work out.

Third throw of the dice in improving on Moyes in little over a season has got to be his last chance.

The BS campaign must not falter / relent.  A new manafer or coach wont change things longer term. We all know it. Walk out for Brentford game has to happen because the Potter sack timing is probably to ensure Nuno takes over at the next home game with the priority being to soften the protest movement.  Its a classic move from the Sullivsn / Brady playbook.

Aside from perhaps Burnley where its unclear, every club in the Prem Lge has a CEO and DOF position akbeit sometimes slightly different titles.  Sullivan performs both of these functions.  A unique set up. So its hardly a mystery why we continually fail as a football club. It beggars belief and Kretinsky, Tripp and co are culpable for not challenging what is clearly an antiquated, amateurish state of affairs

I’m not reading too much into Kretinsky’s alleged interjection into who gets the job after Potter.

He does seem like a shrewder mind than Sullivan, of course. And he generally seems ok to me. Absolutely nothing against him.

But, at this stage, he’s probably panicking about the value of his own 27% stake in the club. If we’re relegated, that’s 27% of a lot less than he anticipated.

The only board member who “might” benefit from relegation would be “Power” Tripp Smith (8%) because, allegedly, he’s interested in raising potential takeover money from a consortium of Yanks and other investors. And he’d have to raise a lot less if we’re in the Championship. On the flip side, it’d be harder for him to find investors.

Never forget that we’re an investment to all of these people. Gold has gone. Nobody on the board is in it for the love of the club. Just us fans and some players.

Very strange is the perennial silence from Sullivan…

He’s not stupid…B Sc Economics…Queen Mary College…Upper Second Degree…

why doesn’t he communicate with anyone…relies on Brady and his cronies…

Come On Dave…tell us how you feel…

Make a video even…

You know you really want to…
