Football Super league rumours yet again !!

Post ted fenton »

"Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all agree to plan. Five English clubs are among 11 European teams who have signed up to a breakaway Super League in an extraordinary development on the eve of Uefa's announcement of a new Champions League format. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/18/sports/soccer/super-league-united-liverpool-juventus-madrid.html"

Apparently there are existing laws that allow the British Government to compulsory purchase United etc – the government could have the power to buy the club whether the shareholders want to sell it or not? Related to national interests. Lawyers gonna get rich sorting this out.

"Rowenta 10.08 They also signed a bindi g agreement to be part of the Prem league (as in our 6 clubs), so if our Prem. League clubs are being broken then assume the Premier league has every right to.penalise them accordingly. Woulf hate to think these clubs can bully everyone else to bend over backwards to accommodate them. Our footballing authorities need to stand up to them.in fact all fans do as well, including their own, as they are being shafted too."

"Agree with Trundle, the fact that the 6 have signed up for this is reason enough to treat them as the pariah's they have become. However,we need to be careful who we blame here, this is the work of a handful of club owners/chairman etc, not fans, players or managers of those clubs involved. Sadly, nothing will change (much). The premier league know that the 6 are to much of a draw for the worldwide tv market so they will want to keep them on board. We may see the 6 treat the league the way they do the (domestic) cups and play weakened teams as the need for them to finish top 4 goes away. Personally, I'm just glad that I'm old enough to remember a game that was cherished for what it meant, not how much money could be made from it at the expense of the fans."

"I personally think these clubs are too far down the line to turn back. It's going to happen. I see no other solution to this. If they come back, they will be punished in a way that will hit them financially, weather that's a fine, or a points deduction which would leave them without Europe next season, or even worse (for them) relegation. The lure of the golden carrot being dangled in front of their face will be much more tempting than any of those. The punishment should be harsh, and pretty immediate. Kick them out now."

Crystal Pallace are a nothing club. Without bigger clubs to play they might as well not exist. During lockdown the big clubs have had a good opportunity to check the streaming and PPV figures. They are clearly confident.

I think Brady met with supporters groups last night and there is a morning meeting with the other clubs I would hope they talk with one voice especially as I expect us and Everton to be leading the charge on this

"Will FIFA do that though? They would wipe hundreds of millions off the world cup if its basically everyones B or C teams turning up UEFA and FIFA cant do much to stop this without wipiing off millions and millions from their own products. They have created these monsters of owners and clubs and lapped it up.....now theres a revolt and they want to stop it but the clubs are too powerful. Its a sorry state of affairs, if the clubs are determined to go ahead i dont see how they can be stopped"

"If there had to be a compromise then they could do something like change the CL format to this: - 4 divisions of 9 teams, so each team guaranteed 16 games. - 4 teams relegated and 4 promoted from each division, with bottom 4 of div 4 replaced by Europa League semi finalists That would give the big teams the security of a guaranteed 16 games each season and have to be really bad to not stay in the competition. This would provide more big matches while keeping it competitive. Thing is though, there's no real compromise to be made. All this money is on offer purely so JP Morgan and the other investors have control over the revenue (TV, sponsorship, commercial, etc.) Any changes to the format won't bring in that kind of extra income to the clubs."

Said on the ITV news last night they're not bothered and this is exactly how they expected it to play out. Also said their legal experts reckon there's no way they'll be kicked out of their respective leagues

What are the chances of FIFA standing by their guns and banning ESL players from international tournaments? Surely that would make some players take a hard look at whether they played for an ESL team or not?

"""Steve Parish of Palace last night seemed to suggest today’s meeting would be about what the 14 other clubs could do for the breakaway clubs to make them stay"" Bending over for them and giving them concessions for doing this is completely the wrong way to deal with it. They have to be punished for this. If that pushes them over to create a super league then so be it. These teams can't be in charge and call the shots."

Haven't they already signed up to it? There must have been a contractual commitment for it to get as far as this?

Steve Parish of Palace last night seemed to suggest today’s meeting would be about what the 14 other clubs could do for the breakaway clubs to make them stay. Should just go in and tell them to fuck off.
