Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all agree to plan. Five English clubs are among 11 European teams who have signed up to a breakaway Super League in an extraordinary development on the eve of Uefa's announcement of a new Champions League format. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/18/sports/soccer/super-league-united-liverpool-juventus-madrid.html"

"If you think this is just their plan, then I reckon you're very much mistaken. They want to make this a global franchise. Within 24 hours, its gone from being the European Super League, to just Super League."

"The more I think about this, the more I want it to happen. Seeing us Duke it out with Everton and Leicester for the title is going to be a bit of a buzz and we are mailed on for the Champions League next year too I can't stand those franchises anyway."

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Others have mentioned that a midweek evening game does not suit their international audience. So in the long run they would move to weekend games competing directly with all the domestic leagues in Europe. The PL would be mad to even give them any concessions. They know what this means. They could not possibly let the 6 compete in the PL at the same time as being in the SL. It would be like giving the knife to your would be murderer.

They're ultimate goal would be to create a global franchise with these founding teams locating to all parts of the world. They'll be kick offs at all hours.

"ParadiseLost 6:19 Tue Apr 20 Someone mentioned Wenger on the radio the other day, who said that when this idea was first mooted some years ago, it was talked of the super league games being played at the weekend, and the PL games moved to midweek. This is probably their ultimate goal."

"Pub Bigot 6:13 Tue Apr 20 I suspect that would only become an issue if the authorities were to declare the ESL as a non-approved competition, then maybe forcing a player to take part in it could effective be regarded as asking the player to break the law. As I don't believe the ESL formally exists yet, I doubt that issue can currently be addressed."

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"Mike my suspicion is, for legal reasons, the breakaway clubs don’t want to break any existing contracts (like the EPL TV rights) as they din’t want to be liable. Now, if someone was to kick them out of the EPL they wouldn’t be able to meet their contracts, and they would not be the liable party. So, midweek evening for now, but that’s not the big plan. These boys are going to be lawyered up while Sullivan is still going to be using the brief who got him porridge in the 80s."

Mr Kenzo 5:32 Tue Apr 20 Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !! I'm going to wait for Marcus Rashford to have his say before i decide whether its a good or bad idea. He has made a statement.... along lines of... It's a right load of old cսnt ain't it... also if you have any spare wagon wheels can you send them to him so he can feed some kids or something

"One question I asked earlier in the thread was whether this would impact player and staff contracts. Are players contracted to specific leagues and tournaments, or are they purely connected to the clubs, therefore, play as and when the clubs forces them to?"

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"ParadiseLost 5:54 Tue Apr 20 Good point, that nobody seems to have picked up on. When I was in Indonesia/Malaysia/Thailand, mid-week games were on at stupid o'clock and there were very fer entertainment venues willing (or able) to stay open that late). Middle East was not so bad, but still a bit late (for an old git like me). Would need to be mainly weekend lunchtime/early afternoon kick-offs if Asia really is the main target audience - and that assumes the games take place in Europe.."
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"This has nothing to do with the ""good of football"" its all about shoring up all the money in the game for the JPM6 and screwing the rest of us. The price of this must be banishment from domestic competitions of the respective countries and UEFA European competitions. It's a LOT of money and the price must be accordingly high. In my view that's too high a price to pay for these clubs long terms as I really cannot see anybody in the UK watching this shit. I can see a world of regret in a few years time."

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Most of these clubs were laying off fringe workers during the pandemic and behind the scenes they were going behind the backs of football authorities discussing contracts worth hundreds and hundreds of millions. Scum.
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Mike Oxsaw 5:45 Tue Apr 20 Ok but notwithstanding the board members what are the clubs going to do if the manager and players are against it? Sack them all? The players and managers of these clubs never need to work again. If the clubs did they would face even more of a backlash than they are having now.

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"I’m not in Asia but I am in Latin America, a big market for the Spanish teams. ESPN has the EPL and Spanish leagues down here. In the past few weeks, coincidentally I guess there has been few EPL games. Generally I get to see all our games but the past three have been missing. Generally I think that the EPL contract was seen as expensive. Directv used to have the franchise. Here they’d watch the big two Spanish teams play the muppets. However as others have said the midweek evening format doesn’t work for Asia and equally it fails here and in the USA. If they get kicked out my expectation is that they would move to a weekend format and compete with national league broadcasts."

"The JPM6 have shown no respect whatsoever to their fellow PL members. If they learn that they can get away with such an attitude now, they'll just keep coming back for more every time they've pissed their own wealth up the wall. We'll have 6 pimps and 14 willing bitches."

"If they are allowed back with their tails between their legs, then surely the owners would be looking to sell up smartish?"
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"Mike, I see what you're saying and somewhat agree. The remaining 14 clubs will go with the option that least financially hurts them, so they're not going to kick the renegade clubs out. For me, if that is the prevailing thought process, it's shortsighted. The financial pull of the league would be damaged. Still, other clubs could eventually fill the void left by the six separatists as it will be a league with real competition, drama and excitement. The 14 clubs could reform the game and introduce wage caps and other changes that suit the game, progress the game and protect clubs, players and fans alike. I'd also treat the ESL like a separate code of football."

zico 5:42 Tue Apr 20 We're still in the middle of a pandemic. Very few people will put their job on the line for whatever reason in times like these. Self-preservation wins every time.

"There must be board members of these clubs that are against it. Throw managers and players into the mix it could get interesting, especially if the only ones who want it are a handful of chairmen."
