Football Super league rumours yet again !!

Post ted fenton »

"Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all agree to plan. Five English clubs are among 11 European teams who have signed up to a breakaway Super League in an extraordinary development on the eve of Uefa's announcement of a new Champions League format. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/18/sports/soccer/super-league-united-liverpool-juventus-madrid.html"

"Aston Villa chief exec: He added that the clubs could ""in theory"" be expelled, but ""no one wants to perform an act of self harm"". ""What we need to find is a way to enable these two tournaments to thrive and they won’t be better off without those clubs,"" said Purslow. They will have their ESL and stay in the PL. The 14 will get some money and the opportunity for one of them to qualify for the ESL every season."

"I still think the ace they feel they have up their sleeve is offering to drop the no relegation condition. As has been said, the amount of money they get in the first season alone makes that an irrelevancy anyway. Can somebody on social media raise that issue and see what the general consensus is? Do people feel that all the opposition will melt away with the removal of that academic technicality?"

"nychammer 7:20 Tue Apr 20 Last time I was in NYC I went to see the Rangers at MSG. The whole experience was very American but it was generally excellent, even without the fights. If the ESL take football, perhaps we could have NHL here?"

"I visited two MLS games in 2010, Iris, and my cringe meter was off the charts! It was shit. The standard may have improved but what I've seen online, the supporters have got worse. Look up Fight and Win at Portand for a chuckle."

"""There seems to be more terrace action at NFL games but when it comes to ""soccer"" it will be a bunch of do-do's in the stadium."" Agree went to a NYC FC game a couple of years back and it was a million miles away from what you'd expect to see at Upton Park in terms of atmosphere, engagement and passion of the spectators. Some nice beer and food to be had tho This is a bunch of US based execs who want to impose the US model and don't understand or get the the British match day experience. So very short sighted."

Darlo Debs 7:15 Tue Apr 20 There are already rules in place for what happens when a team cannot fulfil it's obligations to play a match.

"irisiris95 7:12 Tue Apr 20 Cheers. So, basically just another billboard onto which they can hang advertising. Used to have something very similar in the 1960s - a bloke walking up and down Oxford Street with ""Death is Nigh"" placards all over his person."

"Mike maybe so but what happens to the games they were yet to.play, do those points go straight to their opposition? Will that have any impact on the other relegation spots?"

"To answer Oxsaw's question, I'm in the US and media haven't reported much here in the US apart from the BBC. I have attended MLS, NHL, NBA, the rather inept Gold Cup games and I have to say the American experience is that crowds tend to watch about 50% of the action and mainly walk around eating throughout the games. American sports are about stats & advertising. Very nerdy tbh. I have no doubt that this Super League will be built around advertising breaks in the middle of each half and they will cram whatever razzmatazz they can in and around games. Streaming I presume will be the biggest part but it will basically become as dead as most sporting events in the US. There seems to be more terrace action at NFL games but when it comes to ""soccer"" it will be a bunch of do-do's in the stadium. I was at the NY Red Bulls 2011 and a NY guy next to me asked me ""Where's Henry??"" Thierry Henry was in fact 20 meters in front of us and I pointed to him ""...he's there"" The guy replied ""Oh I love that guy !!!!"" That's the level of footballing expertise you'll have at these Super League games & the Exec 's up in the VIP boxes. Bloody cirkus."

Agree with Mike You have 6 teams who openly break the rules. Who is to say what other rules they are willing to break. The integrity of every competition they are currently in is in jeopardy and they should be booted out ASAP.

"nychammer 7:00 Tue Apr 20 If this does fizzle out, it's clear that the authorities at every level need to introduce a new set of unambiguous rules to prevent this sort of thing ever happening again. Lazy fuckers won't though and we'll bumble along until it happens again in a couple of years."

"Darlo Debs 6:54 Tue Apr 20 If they keep playing, they can influence the outcomes for other teams - even take bribes/bet against outcomes/throw games/etc. They don't give a fuck, they're in the ESL next season where they can give FIFA/UEFA/The FA the finger with aplomb. They are six loose cannon that need to be disarmed and safely stored away from the battlefield."

"ok i think its becoming clearer as time passes that its not going to happen. Just looking at all the backlash I cannot see it going ahead if all the players, fans, authorities, politicians, pundits and footballing figures are up in arms to the extent that they are right now. They didn't see this wave of revulsion against them coming. I reckon this is crumbling and The JPM6 will walk it back slither back down their holes. This should not be forgotten in a hurry though/"

"I agree with you Lee and I’m sure part of it is to bring ‘soccer’ to the US buying in big names rather than having a second rate national league. Unfortunately for the analysts at JPM finger painting revenue graphs into powerpoint decks as we talk global sports franchises are tough logistically. F1 has struggled to keep hold of its European audience as it has gone more global and never really got the US involvement it wants. The idea of night races, cute for about five minutes, was never an answer."

"I‚Äôm glad to see GSB come out and say no. I hope they stick to that. If we went along with this, bought off with a place at the table, that would be me done. I would happily start over with a couple of thousand watching an AFC West Ham. I really hope the fans of the cսnt 6 do something similar. Walk away, walk away, with hope in your hearts...."
