Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all agree to plan. Five English clubs are among 11 European teams who have signed up to a breakaway Super League in an extraordinary development on the eve of Uefa's announcement of a new Champions League format. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/18/sports/soccer/super-league-united-liverpool-juventus-madrid.html"

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"Crassus while JPM will likely have sounded people out about buying into the deal, and might even have some soft agreements in place I can’t believe that potential buyers would have folded that quickly. Most of the investments would have ended up in Hedge Funds and the like and they generally dont care who they piss off and how much they piss people off provided they make coin. On the broadcaster I think they would have needed one even with their own distribution. Where I live most dont have credit cards for example. They can pay for ESPN on their cable package at the supermarket but buying a ManU subscription online - not going to happen."

"I think the banks did game play emotion, the emotion of the owners each getting 300 million. There has to be something more than that. They must have known ( the clubs if not JPM) that this would not go down well and yet not one of the clubs made any effort to try to soothe their fans. Remember how our owners tried to quell emotions about the move with the thought of top players (Dawson as it turned out) and regularly competing for Europe. Yet not one of the clubs tried to sell the concept to their fans."

"If this is truly dead in the water: 1) UEFA must ban all the teams involved from their competitions for, say, 23 years. 2) The PL must give each English team involved a 25 point deduction every season for, oh, 23 years. 3) Each English team involved must play all of their home games at a location that is not their home stadium for, hmm, let's think... 23 years. There. The benefits of ESL without the hassle of signing up."

"There will be no punishment against the English teams for signing up this, even if they resign. The premier league will be so happy that they’re gravy train is still intact they will hope it all gets forgotten in the next month or two."

"ParadiseLost 9:54 Tue Apr 20 I can't see the broadcasting being an issue, they have their own platforms Can definitely see governmental intervention here being a curved ball, and also, what of key sponsors, could they have copped the wobble? And finally, could they have been the front/primary for a basket of funders that subsequently had second thoughts, for what ever reason?"

"Mike that confuses me a little as well. Normally American banks handle the legal stuff pretty well (35 years of working for one) so I’m rather surprised it went that easily. I wonder if they factored in governments getting involved, like the threats of windfall taxes, or whether some other key party, like the broadcaster started to get cold feet? They would have had access to the contracts the clubs had with the Premier League so they should have been fully aware of the situation there. I was even surprised that they announced this late on a Sunday without any kind of joint press conference. Either this is one the biggest debacles in Investment banking or something else happened."
