Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all agree to plan. Five English clubs are among 11 European teams who have signed up to a breakaway Super League in an extraordinary development on the eve of Uefa's announcement of a new Champions League format. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/18/sports/soccer/super-league-united-liverpool-juventus-madrid.html"
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Appears to be a £8million equity stake for each club in the ESL. I wonder if this was actually paid up ? and if Perez is now going to sue them to keep it?
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"""I always understood that Real & Barca already took the lions share of the Spanish tv money"" It was changed (by order of the govt) 4 years ago. Used to be that they negotiated their own rights. Now all clubs get 50% of TV money, 25% is performance based and 25% is based on club support (viewing figures). So the big 2 clubs still get more than the others, but not nearly as much as before. Atletico were probably the biggest winners out of the new deal."
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"How do you resolve the issue. Champs League is boring as there are too many games/group games and too many teams when knockout rounds (old style European Cup) was more exciting. the problem with knock out football is they get less games = less money, there's no winning formula. The Super League would have died in no time, big clubs playing each other more making the ties less special, makes it less exciting and with no relegation they would have become effectively friendlies."
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"""But we were trying to work out how to save football."" I believe him but he has a very different definition of football. To him football means millions of worldwide viewers watching two ""important"" teams battling it out for an unimaginably large pot of cash. To the rest of us it's kicking a ball around and trying to get it between two sticks at one end of a field. Skilfully."
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"They won't be any sanctions on the clubs even though they clearly broke written rules. Agree, Champions League is boring. Make it a one game knockout cup."

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"Breaking some financial rule (Sheffield Wednesday) penalty -12 points deducted. Plotting behind the backs of all European Football associations including the Premier League, signing up for a new league whilst demanding they are still permitted to remain in domestic competitions, throwing out many of the opportunities the other 14 premiership clubs currently have, penalty - well the only penalty so far is the one the spuds had against the Saints last night!!! There are too many crooks in our much loved game and until they are all rooted out the future will always be governed by money. Sickening and unbelievable no action has been taken, surprised the 14 have not demanded it!"

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Florentino Perez REFUSES to give up on European Super League as he insists all 12 clubs signed a 'legally binding contract' and 'nobody has left yet'... while bizarrely suggesting Chelsea protestors were 'taken' to Stamford Bridge https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sportsnews/article-9497739/Florentino-Perez-REFUSES-defence-European-Super-League.html Apologies if done.

"PL sanctions are probably likely to be no more severe than requiring the ""big 6"" to play their first 3 home matches next season at a neutral ground."

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"I havent seen recent figures but I always understood that Real & Barca already took the lions share of the Spanish tv money compared to the Premier league split. Its clear what he is saying .... we want guaranteed games against all the 'important teams' with no jeopardy if we lose. And when we hoover up all the money we will dribble some down to the 'unimportant teams' by taking all your best players. The best outcome for me is if there is a legal shit fight between Super League and those trying to weasel out (for now) while the 14 other Premier league teams sanction the 6 appropriately ... points deductions, massive fines, transfer embargos etc"
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"""The Champions League format is old and only interesting from the quarter-finals onwards,"" said Perez How about a straight knockout competition with rounds, home and away legs up to the final, and just the actual League Champions participating .........they could call it the European Cup."

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
Perez could be the nominated fall guy for the team. A bone thrown to the press wolf-pack. Fully expect it to be announced that he has a terminal illness if the ESL need to spin it a bit harder.
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"""I've been in football for 20 years and I've never seen threats like this. It was like we killed someone. It was like we killed football. But we were trying to work out how to save football."" Says it all really. A 74 year old who has only been in football for 20 years. I suspect if you asked him how many European Cups Ajax, Benfica, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa have won compared to his ""important teams"" Tottenham and Arsenal I suspect he wouldn't even have been able to tell you."

"If those contracts are binding, this could get really interesting, if Perez digs his heels in then the fact they have broken the rules becomes a lot harder to push under the carpet."
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"Yeah, it's no surprise that Man City and Chelsea were the first to pull out. Probably only agreed to join for fear of losing out rather than them really wanting or needing it."

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"I don't know enough about their finances, but I'd guess that Man City and Chelsea are on fairly solid ground. So 6 teams are run badly and running up mountains of debt means that the rest of the footballing world should suffer. Fuck 'em."
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"Exactly LT. Clubs like Barca and Real are massively in debt because they're over spending on wages and transfers to compete with the likes of PSG, Man City, etc. in the Champions League. If the ESL went ahead they would have to spend even more to compete and those sugar daddy owned clubs would always be able to come up with more than them."

Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"""'It isn't fair that in England six are losing and 14 winning, that big clubs in Spain are losing money and the small clubs are earning money."" Isn't he just admitting that these 8 teams are run badly? I'm not sure chucking more money at them is going to change anything. They'd just get more and more into debt."
Re: Football Super league rumours yet again !!
"""the most important teams in Europe play against each other from the very beginning of the season."" tells you all you need to know - they all think the are the most important teams and shouldn't have to bother playing anyone else. i must have missed all those recent CL games featuring man united and arsenal. the italian teams have been poor for a while now - i think Juve have been knocked out by Porto, Lyon and Ajax (?) the last few years. The best two teams (PSG & Bayern) aren't involved either."
