Gutted.... really liked the bloke.. always pissed off that being a Dagger he only had dealings with the Bagels and the Kings Rd mob... would have loved him to be a part of our club. Had tickets for all the Euro 96 games... great times and areal feel good frenzy that only sport can do ... and still say the Dutch game was as good as it gets... anyway we'll never know what he would have been like with another tournament or two... claim to fame with him he ran over my right foot in his Roller when I slipped off a kerb outside Highbury (89)... top bloke.... as is Southgate.... oh and Moyes.... yeah I know... what a cսnt I am liking our current club and International managers... but hey each to their own... anyway last word to Mr Terrence V' WHADYAAAAA WANNA MAKE THOSE EYES AT ME FORRRRRR...

"Sad to learn of his suffering in his last few years. Grew up in his area and played against him in school football. He went on as a pro playing for Chelsea, QPR and Spurs. As a manager he was, for his generation, a progressive rather as was Malcolm Allison before him. On the training ground and at the stadium a complete football man. Outside the game a proper east end ducker and diver. Not many of his type around these days. He can be proud of his time as England manager as our fourth most successful of the post WW2 era."

"very strange hijacking a tribute thread to support southgate. he's cunted because he's pretty unlikable, is far too political and the football is an international version of moyesball. you carry on though thinking euro 96 was shit, and venables was overrated"

"Westside - Fair comments, I recall Spain had a legit goal ruled out for offside too. Maybe it's more a case of his legacy being one as a master tactician and ahead of his time on the training field rather than a Mourinho/Ferguson type who can get over the line with trophies. Was also credited with the attacking Crystal Palace 'team of the 80's' side."

"Sorry to see him go, but thought he got more credit than he deserved as England manager. Had one tournament, had the luxury of 2 years of games, without the pressure of qualifying games and home advantage. Still didn't know his best line up. tactics etc. by the time of Euro 96, hence the changes mid tournament. Qualified for the quarter finals, from a very easy group, The Dutch had virtually qualified when we played them, had no real interest in that game. Lucky to hold Spain to 0 - 0 and win on penalties. Good performance against Germany, which on another day, could have gone in our favour. Strange that he is held in almost exalted status as England manager, yet Southgate, with a similar, or even better record, is widely cunted."

The Venables era was probably the only period I've ever genuinely enjoyed watching England play football.

Best England Manager of the past 30 years. He's teams always played on the front foot. But the establishment saw him as a bit of a Del Trotter. But he could always make a hand out of whatever cards he had been dealt. RIP.

"Shame, very likeable man for a Spurs cսnt. Bit of a shock really, didn't realise he was so old or had been ill. Not sure how I'd have know that but it's surprised me. Time is eating through ex England managers, Hoddle is next on the list and had a close call recently, then Keegan I think. Keegan would be a shame, Hoddle less so. Cheerful!"

"Sad news, another great football man gone. Top pro's always spoke highly of him, was ahead of his time in many ways. Was a shock until you read he had been ill for a long time, then obviously becomes less so. He went back to Spain later in life and ran an high end hotel with his wife. RIP Tel."

"Sad news. He did an interview a while back and looked very happy living in Spain. Well respected manager who was ahead of his time in this country. I met him & Sir Bobby at a charity game once, both were the life and soul of the event. Sad that neither are no longer with us."

RIP Tel…..one of the few that exported the English game majestically…..not many got admiration in the Spanish game especially in the period he managed there. Also loved the style of football he had his teams playing….didn’t get to see him as a player but no doubt he would have been a good watch.

terry-h 2:48 Sun Nov 26 Yep rumours were floating about re dementia. Really sad could have been arguably the best England manager if it hadn't been for those dinosaurs at the FA. That performance against Holland was near perfection. RIP Tel.
