From Euston to Manchester there is a train every 20 minutes and it takes 2 hours and about 20 minutes. How much quicker does the journey need to be? You could always give the passengers a free word search or puzzler book to pass the time if it's too long.

Talking to my self again HS2 have instructed the contractors on section 2a (connection between the East and West midlands) to stop work for 2 (Two )years. Old oak common to Birmingham is the section to be focused on . Predicted finish 2035 to 2040 I would put another 5 years on that HS2 are getting to the stage (Which I have seen many times) of doing something for the sake of it like awarding the contracts for trains fit out and and station fit outs Gathering dust for decades I spoke with 2 people who worked on cross rail many of the materials or components that were bought prior to work starting were obsolete by the time it came to installation

"I've been parachuted into similar projects - some, like this one, it seems, are irredeemable. I've always felt that this little baby was set up as the proverbial sacrificial lamb - there was never any intention to actually complete this as all (ALL) political parties hate, for their own reasons, the railways in the UK (and this time you really can blame Thatcher...and Beeching...and Bevin). Short of cash? Pare back HS2. Still Short of cash? Downgrade/delay HS2 STILL short of cash? Redefine the HS2 deliverables. As someone else mentioned earlier, it will end up as a low speed alternative N/S freight-only route with links to the still under review Varsity line in the south and a big, fuck-off freight marshalling yard at Crewe."

COOL HAND LUKE 11:20 Sat Mar 11 Keeping down the total cost is absolutely not what they are doing. It is keeping down the yearly spend. I used to work for the Procurement Executive in the MoD and we had to do that sort of thing every year on projects. It invariably puts the total cost up by dint of inflation alone before you get to things like economy of scale and disrupting the schedule.

It'll all get pushed back now until after the GE... They are saying they are delaying it to help get the costs down? Surely going forwards the costs will increase? It's defo looking like a tactic to take something contentious off the table elading up to 2024...

"Apparently Phase 1 between Old Oak Common and Birmingham is 40% complete? Reckon before any of the track is laid Phase 1 will revert to an arterial route stopping at the new towns planned along the route, possibly even to connect just north of Aylesbury as it crosses over the East/West Varsity line currently being reinstated between Oxford and Cambridge."
