Di Canio had just joined, we still had Berkovic and Moncur. Sinclair and Lampard were in great form, Rio was one of best young players in the league and Joe Cole was just coming on the scene. Dick's main fumntion in the tream was to defend at left back. Why are people trying to compare him Unsworth who was primarily a CB? As a LB I think he was bang average. Of course to make up for this defficiency he had a cracking left foot. However his attacking forays often left us exposed at the back.

I thought Tihinen and Daily were good, but Rigobert Song? - he was one of the worst players I have ever seen play for us.

I watched every left back that played for West Ham like a hawk - From Dicks to Unsworth (who replaced Dicks at LB) to Minto to Pearce to Winterburn to Brevett to Konchesky to Lucas Neill (who played there to plug a hole due to injuries)....

I could tell you in detail there strengths, weaknesses and playing style etc etc...... And one thing I can tell you is that David Unsworth (who in his short time was actually decent) could not have even dreamed of being in the same room as Dicks, let alone be anywhere near as good or better than him at football. And anybody that says he is is either seeking attention or literally knows fuck all about anything. 

In Ladysmith's case its probably both.

went to that game with two spurs mates from uni. They were thinking it would be a walk over, one of the best nights at Upton Park, very windy as I recall which didn't help. Hartson and Kitson debut impact signings, Inspired business by Harry.

That was the start of my time going as a season holder. We had a relatively stable period of time after that season with some standout players until the Rodent took over. I went to the US in 2004 after we got relegated, but glad that I probably saw some of the best (recent) times at UP and that I never had to deal with the London Stadium

Dicks was a good footballer, he could ping a 50 yard pass and land it on a six pence, read the game well, a superb penalty and free kick taker, a leader by example.
