‘Great Distress’: What latest Kretinsky statement means for West Ham as £1bn plot revealed

Adam Williams

West Ham co-owner Daniel Kretinsky is no stranger to juggling multiple investment projects.

The billionaire, known as the ‘Czech sphinx due to his poker-faced business approach, also owns Sparta Prague and dozens of other businesses through his EPH Holdings company.

But the 48-year-old’s attention recently has been dominated by his attempted takeover of Royal Mail parent company IDS, in whom he already owns a substantial stake.

Now, Kretinsky is understood to be readying another huge acquisition – this time of French IT firm Atos.

He has an option to complete a full takeover of West Ham, but his new investment ventures has raised suspicions that may no longer be at the top of his agenda.

Kretinsky’s remarks about latest business venture

As quoted by The Telegraph, Atos is by Kretinsky’s own admission a business in “great distress.”

“[Atos has been] disoriented by a strategic deadlock and suffocated by an accumulation of accounting and financial problems,” his statement read.

The company, for whom Kretinsky is launching a circa £1billion bid, has huge debts and holds a number of vital contracts for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Turning around a company with revenues of £11bn who presented a loss of nearly £3.5bn in their last set of accounts is an unenviable task and, should he succeed, will occupy a great deal of Kretinsky’s time.

However, a handful of reports in recent months have suggested that the businessman is in fact exerting more control over the Hammers of late.

For example, while David Sullivan and Karen Brady remain the most publicly active in club matters, it is believed that Kretinsky led the decision to replace David Moyes for the 2024-25 season.

When could Kretinsky complete full West Ham takeover?

Through his 1890s Holdings group, Kretinsky is the second-largest shareholder in West Ham with 27 per cent.

Significantly, the family of the late David Gold is believed to be ready to sell a 10 per cent stake of their shareholding.

Should Kretinsky decide to purchase three per cent or more of the Gold shares, that would instigate an obligation to action a full takeover bid.

In theory, this could happen any time. And that may well be welcomed given the turbulent relationship between the West Ham fanbase and the Sullivan-Brady regime.

But given that there has been no movement in shares since the Gold family put them to market almost 12 months ago, it seems unlikely that Kretinsky would launch a takeover bid at this moment.

He is already fighting on two fronts with his campaign to buy two companies in the Royal Mail and Atos whose combined value is well in excess of £10bn. A third may not, at this stage, be in his interests

West Ham Joins Scramble for Belgian Rising Star

West Ham United finds itself in a battle for the signature of promising defensive midfielder Mandela Keita, according to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.

The 21-year-old Belgian is currently on loan at Royal Antwerp from OH Leuven, where he has been a standout performer this season. His impressive displays have attracted scouts from across Europe, including the Premier League.

West Ham faces competition from fellow Premier League rival Manchester United and Championship side Leeds United, all of whom are monitoring Keita’s progress.

It remains to be seen if West Ham will make a formal offer for Keita in the coming months. However, his recent performances and potential suggest he could be a valuable addition to Julen Lopetegui’s, squad, especially considering the Hammers’ need for reinforcements in central midfield.

Adding to Keita’s appeal is his international recognition. Despite his young age, he has already earned a senior cap for the Belgian national team.

According to transfermarkt, he is valued at £8m, so perhaps he is worth a punt?

West Ham Eyes Braga Forward Simon Banza

The Irons has set their sights on Braga’s striker Simon Banza, according to Calciomercato.com. This move adds the Hammers to the growing list of clubs interested in the in-form forward.

Banza has been on fire in Portugal since joining Braga on loan in 2021. He’s racked up an impressive 37 goals in 87 appearances, a record that has him seeking a bigger challenge.

The striker’s impressive form hasn’t gone unnoticed. Italian clubs Roma and Fiorentina are also reportedly interested in acquiring Banza.

West Ham‘s interest comes amidst a managerial change at the club. Incoming manager Julen Lopetegui is expected to receive significant backing in the transfer market. Lopetegui, reportedly frustrated with the limitations he faced at his previous club Wolves, is likely to welcome a more active approach from the Hammers.

Banza’s credentials are undeniable. He showcased his talent on the biggest stage with an assist against Real Madrid in the Champions League. He’s also a proven scorer in domestic competitions, having enjoyed a red-hot streak of nine goals in just seven consecutive league games this season. With a total of 21 goals in 27 league matches, Banza is a highly sought-after striker.

Braga might face a difficult task holding onto Banza this summer, with Mr Steidten no doubt dusting off his passport.

West Ham and Everton ‘more and more concrete’ – Duo playing transfer vultures at relegated club

By Naveen Ullal

West Ham United and Everton have included Burnley’s Jacob Bruun Larsen in their target list for the summer window, according to Bold.dk.

The forward has scored six goals from 31 league games this season and was mainly used as a substitute by Vincent Kompany. His form for Burnley has attracted interest from other clubs, including West Ham and Everton.

Both the Hammers and Sean Dyche’s side have identified the 25-year-old as a ‘concrete target’.

The two clubs haven’t made any offers yet and their interest is expected to become ‘more and more concrete’ in the coming weeks and months.

Burnley signed the 25-year-old on loan from Hoffenheim and despite their relegation to the Championship, Kompany’s side are keen on retaining him.

Their efforts are likely to be made difficult by West Ham and Everton, who have set their sights on the Denmark international.

As of now, Jacob Bruun Larsen will have to return to Germany after his loan spell at Burnley. His deal at Hoffenheim lasts until 2025, and West Ham and the Toffees will have to negotiate with them, to try to secure the Dane’s services.
