Euro 2024
We seem to have an England v Bosnia thread but not an actual Euro 2024 thread so here it is

So, do we realistically think England can win it? On paper we obviously have a very talented squad but I just don't see us going all the way. For me it's "same old" when it comes to England. Breeze the group, favourable draw in last 16 and win then up against far superior opposition in the QFs and out. At best I can see us at the SF stage before being beaten again.

Winners for me:

France, Portugal, Spain

Dark horses:

Germany - even though it's a home tournament they've been in a consolidation period, could go close

Biggest flops:

Scotland - no goals scored

Top goalscorer:

Mbappe

I'm just hoping it's a decent tournament with plenty of decent games that's not ruined by VAR (are they using it?)

consolidation period but could go close

''I've little doubt Spain beat France in the other semi''

I'm not so sure, France can find a way to win and Spain have a history of bottling big games (golden gen aside)

Re: Euro 2024
Rightly or wrongly Kane will start, fine, but don't fucking leave him the whole game, if he's not performing take him off on 60. I'd also start Shaw, time to take a slight punt on him, they say he's fit now so start him, it could give us a much better start.

As for the outcome, ffs no idea at all, but really hope we do it.

Re: Euro 2024
Southgate seems to have tried to install a Mourinho 'everyone hates us and its us against the world' type feeling in the camp - But I am afraid its just coming across as victim culture with a load of pampered whinging little cunts completely unable to accept any criticism.

They're relying on the fans and media now 'riding the wave' which of course, as this is now a semi-final, we will. 1/4 finals and beyond are about winning and getting through. Nothing to do with performance. That plays into Southgate and the teams hands because, quite frankly, they have been fucking dogshit and totally inept, bar the first half against the fondu eating Nazi sympathisers.

Instead of a group of so called men sitting in a room and discussing how shit they have been and why and demanding more from each other to change it, they are just moaning at the people moaning at them. And without a proper manager and leader forcing them to accept their shortcomings and protecting them like some sycophantic dad, then they won't accept that.

And, for me, add that to how badly they have been playing, its making this current England squad hard to like. But that is now by the by and water under the bridge.

I am glad Southgate changed it up - And with the fitness of Shaw now more reliable, it looks like we may finally have that balance on the left that we so desperately need. And with the weed smokers now looking better themselves, they may actually come at us which will allow us some space to play some proper positive aggressive attacking football, rather than the monotonous "sideways backwards" style that I would rather peel the skin off my eyes than watch.

With Shaw on left, Saka coming to form and Foden operating more centrally I do feel we have more than enough to beat this bang average Dutch side.

Southgate's only issue is his favouritest player in the world ever, Kane. Who, honestly, has been so poor its been hardly believable. Had I not witnessed with my own eyes how bad Kane has been i would say it was lies. And not only does Kane being as bad as he has affect our ability to score, it fundamentally affects the whole way we play as he slows us down too a grinding halt. How he has had so many minutes on this form is a joke. And Southgate needs to grow a pair and get him off quicker. Seeing Kane trying to make tackles in an area where Rice, Bellingham, Mainoo and Foden operate is about as frustrating as it gets.

And Southgate is now not only coaching like Moyes. He sounds like him. His latest soundbite of "That's 3 semi finals in 4 tournaments" is similar to hearing Moyes remind us he won the Europa Conference after we have been beaten out of the FA cup by a rampant Bristol City.

In the current time it means nothing.

Southgate is a likeable man but missed his calling as a politician. But as likeable as he is, he is average at all he does. If he wins this Euros, whilst we will possibly the most average team to ever win it (bar Greece arguably), he will deserve the upmost respect and kudos. I hope he does. I really do.

But my gut tells me we won't. Because, he is a loser. He's proved that. And I fear he will prove it again by snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Like Croatia 2018, Italy 2020 and France 2022.

I mean, it's what he does.

Re: Euro 2024
Southgate like Moyes. will always pay the opposition too much respect . Gakpo is a seriously good player and no doubt van dijk will have kane in his pocket. It genuinely is a 50/50 game . I've little doubt Spain beat France in the other semi ..

I see that the ref appointed is that match fixer that Rice had a go at after our Conference league loss. Bellingham has also called him out in the past.

Re: Euro 2024
He's not changing now is he? As far as the FA is concerned it's already a huge success. The cupid stunts. Its going to be a bore fest until they score then we put on some mobile players and we draw.

Re: Euro 2024
If he can get Shaw and Palmer on the left and replace Kane I think England can win comfortably ... 2-0 maybe
Its hardly a great Dutch team ... DePay & Weghorst. Hardly Van Basten or Van Nistelrooy is it?

Manuel 8:28 Mon Jul 8
Re: Euro 2024
It's hard to have much faith that we are now going to turn up and play well at the SIXTH time of asking, won't help that Kane won't be dropped. Of course we can beat the Dutch, but it won't be pretty and could easily go to pens again.

Re: Euro 2024
Foden has looked bang average, obviously a good player in a system surrounded by superstars.
I don’t get the hype regarding Bellingham attitude stinks, wasn’t liked by team mates at Dortmond,
Admittedly I don’t follow Spanish football.
Our best player by a mile has been Saka.
credit to the young players who took their penalties impeccably

The Dutch set up is to play attacking football so our defence will need to step up a gear .
We’re more than capable of beating them on the counter..
Would much rather play Spain or France in the final if we get there over a very unlucky German side at home.
We’ve been crap,France worse.Spain lucky to beat the Germans in my humble.
About time we won the fucking thing.

Re: Euro 2024
Foden is not overrated. Every club in the world would have him. He stands out as the star man in Man City’s team.

The difference is he isn’t given any freedom with England. Messi wouldn’t stand playing in a team that has every player in your own final third without a single outlet until you concede. It means on the rare occasions he does get the ball in dangerous areas he is trying too hard to do something special and overplaying.

It was exactly the same with Paqueta last year. England, like West Ham recently, play 15/20 yards too deep. It’s such an easy fix, step up the pitch, press higher, move more and dominate games. It doesn’t mean you have to lose your shape. Some managers just don’t have the desire for front foot football.

Re: Euro 2024
Not much of a spectacle watching England but we are in the semi final.

This tournament is there for the taking.

I’ll have a right old knees up if we finally manage to win it.

Saka and Palmer are the two players that are starting to show out. I do like Bellinghams game and attitude. I’d like to see more of Toney.

Still think Foden is overrated, especially for England although he had his best game for England against the Swiss.

Walker as good as he is has a tendency to switch off and let the forward in front of him in front of goal. His lapse has cost England on a couple of occasions now.

Holland will be our biggest test, I fancy our chances this time around.

Come on England!

Re: Euro 2024
Holland in the semi gives a better possibility of us getting to the final than having to play Spain or France.

We can and should beat the Dutch and we certainly have the experience and ability in the team to do so. The right tactics and mindset will be needed to make it to the final.

Re: Euro 2024
It probably helped coming in late but Shaw balanced the team better.
A left footed left back eh? Radical
Will he stick with 3 at the back & will Guehi come back given Konsa had a good game
In all games have looked more threatening with Palmer on the pitch. Is always on the move & making things happen
The elephant in the room is the turgid form of Kane. Will never be dropped but would be ironic if he’d gashed his shin Jimmy Greaves style when Southgate body checked him into the dugout & one of the others came in Geoff Hurst style

Southgate would never play Bowen on the left, so he wouldn't even consider him instead of Eze or Gordon... which is ironic given his determination to play Trippier on the wrong side all tournament

Ron Eff 4:49 Sun Jul 7
Re: Euro 2024
I don’t think we beat the Dutch unless there is a drastic change in approach. Almost need a mindset that we are one down at all times. The luck runs out eventually when you churn out the negative shit we have. Nobody is that lucky, you would imagine.

You’d think he’s had enough warnings by now, but he’s a stubborn fucker.

Re: Euro 2024
Kane needs someone (or two) with pace on the wings to be effective. See Son, Gnabry, Musiala etc, where he can drop in and turn creator as well as being clinical when be does get a chance in the box. It just doesn’t work in this system. It’s a system that needs running in the channels and constant movement from the striker. The exact same reason Antonio was our only striker to work under Moyes.

When did Eze move ahead of Bowen in the pecking order? Completely switched off from his defensive duties in extra time and England got lucky. I’m not buying that wingers can’t do a job on the opposite side to their usual. In fact, if you have a right footed left back, I’d argue it is essential to have a left footed winger to provide at least some natural width.

Bowen is criminally underrated, even by some of our own. If he played for one of the popular six, he would see much more international game time.

Re: Euro 2024
Interesting that coming into the tournament the main worry was the defence but it's been the attack that's been in need of improvement. Thought they defended quite well last night and Konsa was excellent . Creates an interesting problem for Southgate with Guehi available for the Semi.

Re: Euro 2024
If Shaquiri’s corner kick in the dying moments of extra time had gone in with England’s goal minder floundering, instead of bouncing away off the crossbar, the cunt Southgate would have fucked off by now in disgrace.

ED - You've also been saying for the past 3 tournaments that Pickford is likely to make a major fuck up and cost us, but you have still have at least one game left :-)

Re: Euro 2024
Fwiw, I'd rather play Spain if we manage to get past the Dutch, yes they have looked the best side but think we have a problem with France, they have our number and can see the same ending as in the last world cup, Spain, golden generation aside, have a habit of fucking things up when it comes to the business end, yea I know we do as well, but mentally I think we're better off playing the Spanish?
