Euro 2024
We seem to have an England v Bosnia thread but not an actual Euro 2024 thread so here it is

So, do we realistically think England can win it? On paper we obviously have a very talented squad but I just don't see us going all the way. For me it's "same old" when it comes to England. Breeze the group, favourable draw in last 16 and win then up against far superior opposition in the QFs and out. At best I can see us at the SF stage before being beaten again.

Winners for me:

France, Portugal, Spain

Dark horses:

Germany - even though it's a home tournament they've been in a consolidation period, could go close

Biggest flops:

Scotland - no goals scored

Top goalscorer:

Mbappe

I'm just hoping it's a decent tournament with plenty of decent games that's not ruined by VAR (are they using it?)

consolidation period but could go close

Re: Euro 2024
Utterly extraordinary that this ref with his history is getting big games like our Europa semi & THIS semi
Plenty of excellent refs so far in the tournament
Obviously Taylor & Oliver can’t do an England game but neither should be in contention for the semis & final

Re: Euro 2024
H&P,

The EUROs final narrative will be about 'star players' - Mbappe v Kane, Mbappe v Bellingham, Yamal v Bellingham etc.

Do you think they want a Mbappe v Gakpo final?
Asian, African & American markets would struggle to name half a dozen Dutch players.
As long as the England fans don't burn down Dortmund in the pre-match festivities Kane will be leading England onto the Olympiastadion on Sunday evening.

A Spain vs Holland final will be very interesting from the European history perspective; it might generate a valuable discussion of what manner of political and cultural a beast Europe actually is (the product of an ongoing bourgeois revolution being fought against the old feudal order now so much in ascendant).

Re: Euro 2024
I'd expect that most refs appointed by FIFA, UEFA etc for these tournaments are susceptible to suggestions by the tournament organisers to deliver a desired result.
That applies equally if not more so to the English refs utilised.

Clattenburg was openly corrupt when he officiated.
Webb was dodgy.

Michael Oliver & Anthony Taylor don't get to officiate games at these tournaments because they are paragons of virtue & are incorruptible.

Having an openly dodgy ref isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Isn't it better having an openly corrupt ref favouring you than a secretly dodgy one against you?
Then there is always a chance that UEFA will tell him it doesn't matter which side wins.

UEFA might want a France v England final.
I don't know why UEFA would want the Dutch in the final.

The Netherlands only got to the 2010 WC final because they couldn't stomach a Uruguayan final appearance after Suarez's handball v Ghana in the qtr final.

I reckon England supporters will be grateful the ref was corrupt after the game & the Netherlands fans will be the ones complaining.

this referee is the prick that sent off Cresswell in our Europa League QF against Lyon

Re: Euro 2024
So the ref for tomorrows game has previously been done for match fixing, and Bellingham has previously been fined for calling him out in public. how is that not a conflict of interest? how is this man still allowed to ref a semi final in an international tournament.

bruuuno may have hit on a good point. I don't believe we will, nor is it realistic, to play for pens from the start but the deeper the game goes we will def have at least one eye on them.

England will not win another game playing with 9 men. Out of interest, Harry Kane, when did UEFA allow spectators on the pitch?

Re: Euro 2024
The Dutch will finally get their Euro 96 revenge and hammer us.
We haven't looked like scoring from open play. What I would say is we have penalty takers with a strong mentality. Toney, Alexander Arnold, Cole Palmer all very calm and you would back them pretty much all the time.
This time next week we will have forgotten about this car crash of a tournament from the spectacle point of view and be focused on signings and the new season.

Re: Euro 2024
I'd like to see Toney at our club.

Seems decent and confident. Need that level of self belief.

Only questions are value and his scoring form since his ban.

Big questions actually

Re: Euro 2024
The ball doesn’t move & he basically walks up and watches the keeper
Very successful for him
Ironically if the best two penalty takers … Toney & Palmer … started England wouldn’t need penalties

Re: Euro 2024
28 out of 30 pens says his technique works. One of those he slipped as he took it I believe. The man is confident I'll give him that.

Re: Euro 2024
That penalty style of Toney is surely an accident waiting to happen ?

bruuuno 9:16 Mon Jul 8
Re: Euro 2024
I really think that the game plan is to draw every game and win on pens. Our pens were excellent on sat and I think the players have been training hard for this outcome. Could be a master stroke by cuntgate..
