Ferencvaros 2-2 West Ham: Lopetegui era starts with a draw

West Ham complete a second-half comeback to earn a draw in their first game of pre-season against the champions of Hungary.

By Ryan Watson

Julen Lopetegui’s side have earned a hard-fought draw after going two goals behind.

Ferencvaros took the lead in the 24th minute through Owusu Kwabena. Aleksander Pesic doubled the lead just before half-time from a tight angle.

Danny Ings was on the scoresheet for the Hammers, with a stunner of a free-kick which found the top corner. Nayef Aguerd got the leveller with the last kick of the ball from inside the six-yard box.

Summer signings Luis Guilherme and Max Kilman make their debuts from the start. Wes Foderingham was introduced in the second half to make his Hammers debut.

Story of the Match

West Ham started with three youngsters; Freddie Potts, Lewis Orford and Gideon Kodua. Aaron Cresswell captained the side for the first half.

The Hungarian champions started well with an early chance created for Owusu Kwabena who picked up the ball from the left-hand side, but his effort went over the bar.

The Hammers started picking up big possession spells as the half commenced despite the early scare. An early cooling break slowed proceedings in the first half following the intense heat in Kitzbuhel.

Ferencvaros took the lead, moments after the restart. A long ball from Christian Ramirez found Owusu Kwabena and he controlled it well and finished smartly

Maxwell Cornet came close to levelling the game just over the half-hour mark with a rebounded effort going over the bar following a shot from James-Ward Prowse.

Just before half-time, Aleksander Pesic doubled the lead after beating Konstantinos Mavropanos to a ball played in behind and rolled the ball past Fabianski into the bottom corner.

Lopetegui made nine changes at half-time with Kurt Zouma, Emerson, Nayef Aguerd, and Danny Ings all making an appearance. Kurt Zouma took the armband for the second half.

Inside the first few minutes of the second half, the lead was halved after a stunner of a free-kick from Danny Ings. The 31-year-old curled the ball over the wall, beating Adam Varga.

After the early goal at the start of the second half, Ferencvaros took charge of the game creating some big chances testing Wes Foderingham.

Wes Foderingham made a good save down low to deny Aleksander Pesic from reinstating their lead. The crossbar then denied Bassey from scoring after an explosive effort beat Foderingham.

With a few minutes remaining, Andy Irving crossed the ball into the box. Nayef Aguerd beat the offside trap and finished past Adam Varga.

The final whistle was blown amongst the celebrations of the equaliser and it signified the end of Julen Lopetegui's first game at West Ham United.

Player of the Match - Danny Ings

A brilliantly executed free kick on the edge of the box from Ings saw the Hammers bring a goal back, sparking the late comeback and equaliser. An impact off the bench is what Ings has been hoping to do for many months now, and he may just be getting his chance in Lopetegui's system.

Four things we learnt from Ferencváros 2-2 West Ham:_

Defensive weaknesses remerge

Last season West Ham battled to find a fluently effective centre-half pairing, which was disrupted with injuries and various other factors however this came to the fore again in Austria. Kostantinos Mavropanos notably struggled with misplaced passes and overall struggles in possession.

Also with question marks over the mobility of Kurt Zouma and concentration levels of Nayef Aguerd, Lopetegui needs to finalise his first choice pairing during this Pre-Season in order to settle the backline ahead of our first game in August.

The new addition of Max Kilman also featured after his £40m move from Wolves, with no glaring errors in Austria his price tag suggests he will be involved in the starting pairing, the main question is who will provide company alongside him for the Hammers.

Individual Ings brilliance

With the Hammers trailing it felt as if some magic was required to gain some confidence and threaten the Hungarian Champions. This was delivered sensationally from a player who has suffered from lack of game time over his West Ham career.

The veteran whipped his right foot around the ball and purposefully found the left corner leaving the keeper with little chance and providing a pathway back into the game for Lopetegui's side.

This begs the question of whether Ings can be effectively utilised in the new season potentially in a front two. It was evident last season his role as a sole striker doesn't work, so maybe Lopetegui could debate a role for the 31-Year-Old as a strike partner to create attacking options going forward.

Youngsters on show

These friendlies are always a perfect invitation for Youth to get game time, Lopetegui accepted this with 12 youngsters in the matchday squad.

With the likes of Potts, Earthy, Kodua & Casey involved, they offered blistering energy to try and impress the new gaffer. Specifically Earthy will be keen on making a good initial impression after breaking through under Moyes at the back end of last season.

Kodua looked composed in an otherwise unstable backline during the first half whilst others looked tidy and will be looking to gain more priceless minutes in games to come.

Another summer addition was Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras, the 18-year-old is held in high regard which can be initially inferred from the £20m plus transfer fee that brought him to East London.

Today, he looked lively and was quick to link-up with other players to enhance the attacking tempo, which will be gratefully received amongst the Hammers faithful if continued. With his age rawness and inexperience is expected but the talent and flair is evident for all to see.

Second half resilience

After an underwhelming first period it would've been easy for the Hammers to fold and be resigned to defeat in a game that means very little in the grand scheme of things however the resilience and perseverance to carry on and get back in the game was impressive.

Admittedly, changing all bar two players at half time probably helped fitness levels as the game went on in sweltering heat but the will and patience to level the game with the last kick of the game will please Lopetegui and speaks volumes of the work rate and effort levels amongst the players involved.

The final action of the game saw new face Andy Irving link up with Nayef Aguerd to make it honours even in the remote Austrian location.

With several Pre-Season games left to be completed this game was never going to be of the highest quality nor do or die for West Ham however there is plenty of key takeaways for Julen Lopetegui and his staff to analyse and improve before the Premier League gets underway on the 17th of August.

West Ham ready to bid £17m for target as rival club pull out of race

Billy Meyers

West Ham are now set to submit an opening offer for one of Julen Lopetegui’s targets after a competitor withdrew from the race.

Tim Steidten – Director of Football at the London Stadium – has already been busy so far this summer, spending £26m to sign Luis Guilherme, while also splashing £40m on Max Kilman.

Now, West Ham are ready to part with £17m to secure another target…
West Ham ready to make Aaron Wan-Bissaka bid

A story from Fotospor in Turkey now claims that West Ham are preparing to pay £17m for Manchester United No.29 Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Turkish news outlet also provide comments from Galatasaray Chairman Ibrahim Hatipoglu, who revealed that the Super Lig champions have only set aside €10m (£8m) to sign a new right-back this summer.

While Wan-Bissaka is up for sale at Old Trafford, Manchester United are highly unlikely to accept such a low amount for a player they spent £50m to sign from Crystal Palace in June 2019.

Regardless of whether Galatasaray could find a way to use that £8m in a manner which tempts the Red Devils, West Ham are seemingly in pole position to sign the Londoner as £17m is prepared to be put on the table.

Wan-Bissaka made 30 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United last season, helping Erik ten Hag win the FA Cup, although as aforesaid, he is up for sale with just 12 months remaining on his contract.
Tim Steidten could secure a bargain

If West Ham manage to sign Wan-Bissaka for a fee in the region of £20m, it could prove to be a significant bargain.

The 26-year-old saw his value drop at Old Trafford as Ten Hag often preferred to use Diogo Dalot on the right, while Manchester United’s lack of success in general has also affected his price tag.

However, with one solid season at West Ham, Wan-Bissaka could easily restore his value back up to the £50m mark, especially if he helps the east Londoners get back into Europe.

There is the prospect of Everton coming in for Wan-Bissaka, although we would presume he’d lean towards a move to east London, closer to his home in south London.

West Ham pushed forward for €20m swap deal – Hammers would want wages subsidised

Juventus continue their efforts this summer to get rid of players they don’t see playing a big role under new manager Thiago Motta next season.

Two of the exits they most want to secure are Weston McKennie and Arthur Melo. The US international was almost included in the deal which took Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa to Juventus, however, he wanted a pay off from the Turin club and to be one of highest paid players at the Birmingham side.

That deal then collapsed.

Arthur has been linked with clubs including Everton, and now West Ham are dragged into the picture. According to Calciomercato, Juventus could arrange a swap deal with the Hammers.

That would see Kostas Mavropanos moving from West Ham to Juventus, and Arthur going the other way.

Both players would be valued at €20m.

Arthur spent last season on loan at Fiorentina, and did well. Juventus subsidised his huge wages there, continuing to pay 70% of his salary during the period.

West Ham would surely ask for something similar to go through with a move.

Inter Miami News

West Ham make first approach to sign ‘really impressive’ Inter Miami youngster

Premier League side West Ham have reportedly made their move to sign one of Inter Miami’s most highly-rated talents.

The summer transfer window is in full flow across the world with some big-money moves in the works as we speak, with Inter Miami playing their own role in the market, namely in their pursuit to sign former Real Madrid star Raphael Varane.

With Sergio Ramos also believed to be a target for the Herons, it’s clear that the Florida franchise are ready to spend big this summer on a new defender, with Nicolas Freire currently out for the rest of the year after injuring his ACL.

Yet one Inter Miami star could be heading to the Premier League in the coming weeks.

West Ham make first contact to sign Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez

According to journalist Bruno Pont, West Ham have made their first move to sign Diego Gomez, with the Inter Miami midfielder already wanted by Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion this summer.

Pont wrote on Twitter: “West Ham and other Premier clubs asked about the Paraguayan, Diego Gomez. An Italian club has also appeared as interested.”

Praised by Kieran Gibbs as a ‘really impressive’, Gomez is attracting a lot of Europan interest this summer, with the 21-year-old midfielder enjoying a great year at Inter Miami even after missing the last two months due to injury.

And with West Ham now in the race to sign Gomez, Inter Miami could soon see a bidding war begin between the Irons and Brighton for the Paraguay international, which might be beneficial for the Herons.

Gomez has a big transfer decision to make this summer

Gomez clearly has a huge future in store in Europe with Premier League teams already chasing the versatile midfielder with clubs from Italy also monitoring the Inter Miami star.

And this summer, Gomez will need to make a big decision on which team he wants to join, with the Herons slowly losing their grasp on keeping hold of the 21-year-old for the rest of the window.

Indeed, Gomez has the potential to become a real star if he was to move to England, and Brighton and West Ham will be ideal landing spots for the youngsters, who can thrive in the Premier League.
