West Ham eye move for former Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori, with shock approach for fellow ex-Blues star N'Golo Kante in doubt after Al-Ittihad insist France midfielder is NOT for sale

West Ham saw an opening £15million bid for N'Golo Kante rejected by Al-Ittihad
Tomori played 26 times in Serie A as AC Milan finished behind winners Inter
Former Chelsea defender came close to joining the Hammers on loan in 2020

By Simon Jones and Tum Balogun

West Ham are weighing up a move for AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori, amid a failed bid to land former Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante.

The Hammers, under new boss Julen Lopetegui, saw their shock £15million bid for the Al-Ittihad star rebuffed last week. Kante, 33, is thought to be happy in Saudi Arabia but could be tempted by a move back to the Premier League.

It is believed Lopetegui wanted to sign the midfielder during his spell at Real Madrid but a deal never came to fruition.

A potential move to West Ham would end Kante's stay in Saudi Arabia having joined Al-Ittihad on a two-year-deal worth £172m after leaving Chelsea upon the expiry of his contract in the summer of 2023.

Meanwhile, the London club are considering a move for another former Blues star in Tomori following his promising campaigns in Serie A with the Rossoneri.

The 26-year-old defender has made 142 appearances for Milan since his £24m move in 2021.

Tomori, who has been capped five times at international level, was not considered for Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 England squad, despite impressive showings in the Italian top-flight.

He helped AC clinch the Serie A title in his debut season under former head coach Stefano Pioli.

Pioli left the club at the end of the 2023-24 campaign, with former Lille boss Paulo Fonseca taking charge.

And Tomori, who also enjoyed loan spells with Derby, Hull and Brighton during his formative years, admitted that his role may be different under Fonseca.

'A lot is changing,' he said. 'Obviously, there is a new coach, we have new ideas and a good atmosphere. We are working hard and are excited right now.'

West Ham's interest in Tomori comes after they were close to signing him on loan in 2020 but the defender rejected the chance to move to the club just minutes before the end of the transfer window.

He revealed that he decided to stay at Stamford Bridge to further his development.

Speaking on the Chelsea Mike’d Up podcast in 2020, Tomori said: ‘I had a plan going into this season going off the back of last season.

‘Obviously, in football, things change so quickly so I wanted to make sure whatever decision I made was really thought out and to try and do what’s best for me.

‘I made the decision in the end to stay, to improve more, get some more games, gain some more experience and try and get to the levels I was at last season.

West Ham Face Battle to Land Youngster

West Ham United are locked in a transfer battle with Brighton & Hove Albion for the highly-rated Paraguayan midfielder Diego Gomez.

The 21-year-old has caught the eye in MLS with Inter Miami, showcasing impressive talent and a knack for goal contribution. His performances have alerted clubs across Europe, with West Ham and Brighton emerging as frontrunners.

However, while the Hammers are keen on securing Gomez’s services, they have yet to formalise their interest with a concrete bid, but have opened talks to sign Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez this summer, according to the Sunday People. Brighton, on the other hand, appear to be in advanced negotiations with Inter Miami, with a fee of around £11.6 million being discussed.

The race is now on for West Ham to hijack Brighton’s move and bring the talented youngster to the London Stadium. Gomez’s creativity, goal threat, and potential for growth make him an attractive prospect for any club.

With the transfer window still open, the Hammers still have time to mount a serious challenge for Gomez’s signature.
