Watching a West Ham game with George Earthy’s dad: ‘I kick and head every ball for him’

By Roshane Thomas

George Earthy’s family went through every possible emotion on April 14, 2024. A day that saw their loved one make his Premier League debut ended with him in the back of an ambulance, surging through red lights to get to the Royal London Hospital.

Earthy, just minutes into his Premier League debut against Fulham for West Ham United, sustained a head injury when he collided with team-mate Edson Alvarez. Earthy’s head hit the turf and the midfielder received medical attention for seven minutes before being carried off on a stretcher.

The incident understandably caused great stress for Earthy’s parents, Paul and Ann. As Paul waits for his son’s introduction in the second half of West Ham’s friendly against Dagenham & Redbridge, he reflects on the events of that day.

“Initially, we thought he’d just gone down with an injury,” he says. “But Kevin Nolan (the club’s former first-team coach) got someone to get us, which was great, but that’s when it dawned on us it was a lot more serious. It was a horrible feeling for me and my wife. When we arrived at the hospital, George had a brain scan and they checked to see if there was a bleed on the brain.

“Thankfully, we got the all-clear. Honestly, West Ham were excellent in how they dealt with it all. The doctors from the club stayed with us and the club had a car ready for us the whole night. We didn’t need to do anything. In our hour of need, they took great care of us.

“George was watching Match of the Day before they said we could go home. We got discharged from the hospital around 11pm and he spent the next few days at home recovering.”

Earthy’s family have not missed many of his games. They attended all of the home and away fixtures in the FA Youth Cup, which West Ham won in 2023 for the first time since 1999.

Their proudest moment came in March this year when Earthy made his first-team debut against Freiburg. His Premier League debut followed shortly afterwards against Fulham, before his first senior goal against Luton Town in May.

Last season, the England Under-20 international scored 13 goals and registered 10 assists across 27 appearances for West Ham’s under-21s. He was named their young player of the year and received praise from manager David Moyes.

“George is a really, really talented player,” said Moyes. “What George will need to do is build up and improve his strength and his power. His football ability is not in question one bit. George’s challenge now will be to find a way of developing that to the point where he can become an established Premier League player.”

Earthy has already impressed new head coach Julen Lopetegui. The midfielder played 45 minutes of West Ham’s pre-season victory over Ferencvaros and will feature in their pre-season tour of Florida for games against Wolves and Crystal Palace.

When Lopetegui was given a tour of Chadwell Heath by sporting director Mark Noble, they had a brief encounter with Earthy.

“The video of Noble being with Lopetegui and calling George over was a complete fluke,” says Paul.

“George had just got back from a family holiday to Portugal and trained for a few days at Chadwell Heath. He didn’t relax while on holiday, we found him a football pitch and he would train every morning. Hopefully, George keeps working hard and impresses the new manager. We’re all super proud of what he’s achieved so far.”

Paul watched on as an excited parent when Earthy was introduced against Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday. The midfielder had a few efforts on goal but none tested the non-league side’s goalkeeper. There will be more games this season where Earthy has an impact offensively. Paul wants his son to maintain the same principles that have led to this point in his young career.

“I really look forward to watching him but I do get really nervous,” he says. “I kick and head every ball for him. As a family, all we tell him is to impress the staff with your attitude and work ethic. The margins for youngsters to make it as a professional footballer are slim. But if you apply yourself well, be dedicated and do the extras, then you have a chance.

“George’s been at West Ham since he was five. It was Jim Hampshire who first spotted him. I worked that Saturday morning but George’s grandmother attended one of his games and Jim gave her his card. George’s grandmother told me, I phoned Jim and he asked if I could bring George in for a trial. He had two training sessions and impressed. Kaelan Casey (a promising defender from the under-21s) was also there at the time, so it’s been very special watching the boys do well.

“George has stepped it up when he needs to and he always finds that next gear. His first Premier League goal was a wonderful moment for the whole family. It probably came a lot sooner than I thought it would. We have David Moyes to thank for giving George a chance. When we got home, we wouldn’t sleep much because we were all delighted for him.

“Now we’ve framed George’s shirt from his first debut, his Premier League debut and first senior goal. Hopefully, there will be more special moments in the future.”
