They didn't *want* to sell him. They would have, reluctantly, when they needed the money, but once they'd sold Douglas Luiz they didn't have to. He *wanted* to leave (for us in particular) because he knew he would be a starter whereas he wouldn't be first choice ahead of Watkins

Depsite the fact that one of the only things most of us agreed on this summer was the fact that we should walk away from the Duran deal if Villa were demanding £40m.

LOL That's so true. Most on here weren't bothered. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. On another note, it since turns out Villa were never going to sell him anyway.... To anyone. But that won't stop the point scorers from having a pop. 

On other platforms, the consensus is Steidten dropped a bollock failing to land Duran, as if it’s as straightforward as that, and now they’re pinning our start to a poor transfer window. 

For all we know he could be having a purple patch and that his goals will dry up. Had we signed him and he did what most strikers do at our club and failed to score, we’d all be moaning we spunked £40mill on him. 

Apart from the fact that Villa have come out and said he was never for sale. So I will go with the Villa owners rather than a bunch of West Ham fans spouting bollocks on the internet.

Not sure how that can impact FFP unless the structure of the buy vs sale is different and if both clubs were looking to avoid FFP then not sure that could work?

my understanding is they were in some FFP problems so were lining up his sale, which we were up for. But then they sold Douglass Luiz and then actually didnt need to sell Duran so much. Which probably explains why they rejected 40 offers from clubs for him. We probably needed a really silly bid or tried to get him at the very beginning of the window. But I doubt we would have known Luiz was going. I think they took his girlfriend as well! (that blonde one that played for us as well).

So it was really about timing more than anything else.
