I know I have bored everyone senseless for years about the lack of pace and athleticism in our squad especially in central midfield ( apologies as always ) but its so obvious to everyone but remains as the biggest problem we have.  We still cannot, after 3 seasons since Moyes approach was rumbled, play effectively any other way than the "low block" with a fast, direct countering approach.  The goal today was essentially scored that way, we were sitting deep, low block and made a fast counter, 2 or 3 passes and goal. Our other best chances were the same.  We cannot, with this squad, play any other way. Even when Rice was with us we started struggling but not replacing his athleticism was criminal if the idea was to evolve the style to more possession?  We are actually less equipped to play that way now more than ever despite 3 or 4 transfer windows !!.  Lopetegui and Potter have clearly been tasked by Sullivan to have West Ham play a better style, more possession, more entertaining, but both managers either don't or didn't see that we aint got the players for that approach or they just felt forced to try to play that way regardless?  Who knows? but it will never work with the players we have.  To be fair, even Nuno was bombed out of Wolves ( after 3 good league table placings when they first got promoted )  when he similarly tried to change Wolves playing style from 30% possession to one where they would control the ball much more.  He has succeeded at Forest ironically, by reverting back to the sit deep, counter attack style he had at Wolves. Admittedly with players like Gibbs White, Elanga, Anderson, Hudson-odoi etc..  they are even better at it than Wolves were or even Moyes West Ham in those first 2 seasons.

Its like bleedin "Groundhog Day", I can remember 12 months ago and once we knew Moyes was on his bike, us all saying how much the future depended on the success of Tim Steidten in the transfer market, regardless of who was appointed as coach / manager.  Of course, we found out he was not in charge of all transfer matters and then we saw Sullivan appoint Lopetegui and the 3 of them making transfer picks? Amateur, chaotic, circus etc.

Get your lucky horseshoe, 4 leaf clover and rabbits foot out and pray that Kyle Macaulay can do what Steidten, Sullivan and Lopetegui failed to do so spectacularly last summer and identify and get the 5 - 7 players needed to transform the oldest, slowest, one of the worst teams in the Premier League.   Odds of it happening?  Very low especially when you remember that Sullivan is negotiating deals and the de facto DOF.

Oh well, its probably "our turn" for relegation again as that lovable chap Terrence Brown once say 😿
I really don’t understand this point of would we be any better if someone else was in charge
The answer to that is a huge yes providing we stop playing it cheap
Lopetegui is one of the worst managers I’ve ever seen and even he was doing a better job than Potter
I thought we couldn’t get any worse after him but boy was I wrong
Potter is an absolute fraud in this country, he hasn’t achieved a single thing of note, and I would lay money that if we give him the boot he won’t get another job in the premier league ever again

Bit they won’t. The problems aren’t just potter. We have players who aren’t motivated and don’t want to be here. We have players who just aren’t up to it and we are missing quality we need to compete. That said we ahold have had enough to get over the line against Southampton FFS. Those subs were naive tho.

We’ve made our bed now. We will see what transpires over the summer and if we’re still this pony then expect the board will act. Speaking of the board they have to do their bit and back him to get the right plsyers in and not add to our problems.

Really hope we’ve hit rock bottom now and the only way is up. Expect a reaction in the next game too.

Hi TM - realistically, yes, I do. He has to. I’m no fan of Sullivan, and like you I think he’s the source of our woes. But even he would have to consult/talk to Kretinsky etc. Kretinsky is a 27% owner of a club valued at more than £600m - so his share is worth £150m+. Sulli would have to at least speak to them about a decision like that, even if he ultimately took whatever decision followed.

Realistically, I doubt Sullivan etc will make any big decisions until the season ends - not least because he has to keep selling season tickets and limiting investment etc at any early stage jeopardises that (he might take that decision later). And even then, he’d probably stick with Potter. He’d be admitting yet another major failure, quickly, otherwise. And he’s probably too tight to sack him.

Im calling bollocks on this rumour.
But they may be putting pressure on him to accept some cheap options. Why is Soler suddenly getting a lot of minutes, when it seemed he was leaving at the end of the loan. JWP is starting and getting almost full games.

I reckon Potter will walk anyway if not backed in the summer.

If thaat's true sounds like Sullivan's trying to get him to walk.

I know it’s not your rumour, TC, but that sounds like complete BS to me. No football club on the planet makes those sorts of decisions so quickly after a game. Not least because the way the board is currently comprised, Sullivan would probably need to discuss it with Kretinsky, the Golds and others first. Even if it was just a courtesy.

Sullivan sacked Avram Grant after the Wigan Relegation game and would not even let Grant on the coach. I think this is credible.

Potter is just a symptom. Sullivan is the cause. Until the disease is removed. We won't get better. And eventually it will be the death of the club.

I can’t believe that’s true, but you never know with this car crash ownership.

There was a bit of talk before Lopetegui got sacked that Sullivan wanted to wait until the summer for Max Allegri. I wish he had waited!!

I think hanging on for the 1-0 would actually have been a worse outcome.

Some serious questions need to be answered, and Potter needs to be the one addressing them.

I actually preferred Lopetegui.

As someone who’s backed Potter and defended him constantly, even I’ve now lost patience. Travelled up from Somerset today, still on the train as I’m typing and that was so painful to watch today. So passive, slow and lacking any ideas, Southampton actually deserved to win

Potter’s already facing a similar position to Allardyce, when he got forced to bring Sheringham in as a coach to improve the team’s attacking intent.

It’s pretty obvious Potter struggles in attack. Brighton’s  crowd got frustrated with it, Chelsea sacked him for it - and he’s already brought the same shit here. Looks like he’s learned nothing from his nightmare at Chelsea.
All that money, and a ‘head coach’ needs to bring in an attacking coach to help him?

fuck that shit.

he could lose every game left this season & we still won’t sack him.

It's a great idea, Teddy is probably bored of golf, horses and centreforce over 60s raves now. Bring him back as attacking coach, he'd make a fortune playing poker on the team bus.
Haha! Let me be clear: I’m not saying we should offer a job to Teddy. Although the card games would get interesting!
