Shevchenko was another one, although he was brilliant at Milan, and Chelsea have had a long habit of turning top strikers into shit players.
I wanted somebody else to mention Rebrov but yes, that is pretty much a textbook case which largely proves the point!

I reckon he'd missed far fewer games through injury than the majority of players we've signed in their late 20s. We shouldn't have bought him anyway though. He obviously wasn't suited to the pace and physicality of the Premier League.
Yeah it's a fair point.
Historically it's always been a well known fact that players from Russia or also now Ukraine have always been underwhelming whatever top league they get a transfer too whether it's here or Italy, Spain whatever.
Remember Arshevin at Arsenal?

OK - I fucked that one up
Never post before I've had my coffee.
Yarmolenko was still a bit flakey though but I guess the history of our club has always somebody else's cast-offs.

He never played for Sevilla. Or Schalke. You seem to be confusing him with someone else.

Jean-Luc Paul Goddard" wrote: ↑02 Nov 2025, 08:35 Well, I wasted a few minutes reading that article which goes on about how he wasn't good enough for Dortmund (exactly I said) and made no mention at all about his fitness (why would it, seeing as he'd never had an injury in his whole career at that time), so I don't know what made you put that link up unless it was to agree with what I said and admit you were talking nonsense.
I just remember when he signed an-ex manager in Germany saying he didn't work enough on his fitness - that is all. Maybe he just took longer to recover and get up to full speed after an injury was the gist of the message.
He played for Sevilla and was underwhelming there and didn't settle (it's too hot) and at Schalke he was O.K but didn't pull up any trees as the twitchy one might've said. His one season at Dortmund was largely the same. The odd good game punctuated by a few average ones then an injury or two and time on the bench.
Which is more or less how it panned out for us as well. Was it true he was on 115k a week? I remember a figure in that ballpark.
The point is with the way our club is run we rarely, if ever get value for money regarding the transfer fee and wages spent.
I think everyone is sick to death of it tbh.
That was the point.

He got bombed out of Dortmund for not being fit enough to play Bundesliga so I don't know why anybody expected his body to consistently hold together in the Prem.
Where'd you get that from? He missed about 8 games for them with a foot injury the season he was there. Prior to that he'd never had a single injury in his whole career and had already played well over 300 games for Dynamo Kiev. He didn't have physical issues until he came here. Fuck knows what we do to players. The reason he got "bombed out" of Dortmund was probably because he wasn't good enough for them, and they had Pulisic becoming a 1st team regular so didn't need to replace him.

Re: Who is our worst signing?
It says around £9M but remember it being £10M reported at the time, either way still a fuck load of money trusted on him to produce big results. His career now as it was at the time is 1 of a charlatan.

Despite his goal against Sevilla and the double whammy against Chelsea being notable Yarmolenko was well off the pace and largely a disappointment considering his wages and fitness issues. £18M quid for a bloke who rarely featured.

He was good for about 5 goals - I remember another double against Everton but that was about it.Yarmo wasn’t that bad when fit. He got a couple of serious injuries anx scored some really priceless goals and some screamers for us. The one against Sevilla was just an awesome moment which was just after his return from compassionate leave after the invasion- his first game back being the Villa game where he also scored the winner and that was quite the emotional moment as well.
I liked him - obviously a truly skillful player but another example of taking a punt on somebody with physical issues and see how it falls.
We continue to do this when so many other clubs have bypassed this out of date, throw the plate against the wall mentality and see what sticks by having a far superior recruitment model.

The horrible little cսnt even faked his own hostage claim so he could get thousands out of his own family! Sums the fraud up and we were mug enough as a so called top flight Professional Football Club who couldn't afford to waste much around that time.
£10M back in 2009 remember. That's an incredible amount of money back then to spunk on someone knew fuck all about.
Think it was that fat iti twat Gianluca Nani (another useless Director of Football) who convinced us to buy him. cսnt should be locked up for defrauding us.Yep 100%
Absolutely scandalous how nobody got prosecuted for a blatant scam.
Disgraceful
Out of curiosity I just looked up and edited the record transfer of the time Ronaldo went to Real Madrid from Man Utd for £80M! Fucking shocking!

Re: Who is our worst signing?
Ashley Fletcher was shit for us but we got him on a free and sold him for £6.5m a year later. In the current regime that puts him as one of our best signings.

Hernandez scored a few goals for us, considerably more than a few expensive duds and certainly multiples more than the german cripple.
