Re: ⚽ Wolves v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Absolutely. I think you also need a board, manager, scouting system that all sings from the same hymn sheet as well. For instance is Antonio really any better than Stanislas at Bournemouth and yet we got rid of him but he is doing very well under Eddie Howe.

Every Club makes mistakes in the transfer market. I can remember 85/86 when we didn't strengthen enough after that season and had a problem the following year with injuries. Loved John Lyall and he went and bought Dicksy who would have probably won the title for us if he had been there two years earlier but whilst a lot of fans loved Stewart Robson and whilst he was a very good player IMO it wasn't what we needed at the time. I felt he slowed everything down, wanted to do it all and it threw everything out of synch, suddenly it wasn't going from Parkes, to Gale to Dickens too Dev or Ward it was going to Robson who stopped the momentum. He was a better player than Neil Orr but Orr gave it quickly to the people who could play where I think Robson thought he was Roy of the Rovers!

Pell has too many players who just don't fit his system and vision. Carroll left Liverpool because Rogers played on the floor and didn't want him and he only ended up here because of Allardyce but he doesn't fit Pell's style so why persist with him? Obiang doesn't move it quick enough to a Nasri or Lanzini type. Noble "can" still do it but needs two in there to cover him but yes does need an upgrade.

So Obiang and Ogbonna aren't good enough passing wise and neither is Antonio which shows when we are under pressure. When we aren't and the game is open the ball gets to the Nasri's an Andersons and Arnie at his best was running the channels dragging centre half's with him opening up the middle. Now he is sulking staying static like Carroll and that cuts off Anderson's space to come inside. The flipside is when under pressure we haven't got the quality to play out so direct balls are being played up to static strikers and teams now defend deeper to stop Arnautovic running behind and they push up when Carroll comes on because he can't run behind.

We are very easy to play against. The irony is I do wonder if we had Tomkins next to Diop, Kouyate in a three and Stanlisas instead of Antonio we would probably be better than we are now!!

Great post. Agree with all of that.

Absolutely does MP know what he wants. Tat is clearly obvious. And I think that is why the majority of fans are very happy with him as they can see the way he is heading.

But for many years our transfer policy has been as inconsistent as our performances and we go out and get players that are available rather than having a system and then scouting players that would fit into and be able to play that system.

As you say Nasri and Wilshere we got because they were available. You could argue we didn't necessarily need them and had other priorities. But, then again, sometimes you have to get in and get them when available otherwise you lose out.

In the summer we simply must go out and buy Rice a solid partner. I love Noble but he is looking tired now. Obiang just seems well off the pace. There are a lot of options out there but any system must have a solid centre and with Rice and one other it gives us a good point to build from.

Spot on. We have not had an "engine" who can press since Behrami. A blindspot for successive managers.

Agreed but I think Pell sort of knows what he wants to do. It's fairly suggestive that he wants to play on the floor with ideally two up top and that's fine, I think if it works and you got results most West Ham fans would be very happy with that compared to Allardyces long ball crap. 1985/86 esque would be fabulous BUT whilst he does have players who can play it on the floor clearly we don't have the players who can fit into a two up top system "especially" if he persists with only two in central midfield. Even if you plonked Lanzini next to Rice in a CM two it wouldn't be strong enough to cope especially with Anderson in there as well.

Whilst bringing players in to play his preferred system is what we would hope as someone else mentioned we don't have too many players with a sell on value so we aren't going to be blessed with any new 50 million pound players anytime soon. And for some reason we keep buying lightweight wide players, aged players or injury prone players and have done for ages, we seem to be bringing in players into areas that we are ok rather than plugging the holes that need to be plugged. Anderson, Nasri, Wilshire, Lanzini, all lovely on the eye but what we need is strength and someone to put a foot in but we have just carried on with the likes of Noble, Obiang and Fernandes (last season) when that is the area we needed the upgrade. Rice has done extremely well there but it was more by luck that judgement, a need rather than a plan, for all we know Rice as a centre back with two decent central midfielders and Lanzini ahead of him may have given us the stability we are looking for.

agree it felt like the front and back of the team were not on the same wave length.

it was so disjointed. Even the front two were not playing to each other and I thought they got on well it was like the =y never played in the same team before

You raise some good points but I also suggest you are over thinking it.

We need an identity and a system. Then get the players in that can play to it and perform each game.

Just like Wolves, Bournemouth, Watford, Brighton.... Now all with varying degrees of success.... But they demonstrate and identity by playing to a system that works. And every player knows what his part is in that system is.

We don't have an identity on the pitch and often you look at the players and wonder what they think they are supposed to be doing.

I am sure MP is working on this and, to be fair, its hard to maintain any sort of system when you are ravaged by injuries.

But I think that's our biggest problem. We lack a proper system which all the players know and we are so inconsistent because of it.

How do you turn around 10 years of mismanagement and lack of investment in the club as a whole.
---------------------------------------
Supported them for nearly 50 years. It's far more than 10 years mismanagement. Under the Cearns family then Terry Brown then Magnusson I can hardly remember when the club was managed well.

It was Wolves biggest win of the season
We didn’t have a shot on target and they could have had several more goals.
Would be surprised if they had seen anything worse this season.

Maybe Arnautovic being injured will help us against Liverpool. Cresswell and Nasri back hopefully as well. You never know.

We have quite a few gutless rubbish players and when they have to play we are in trouble, even to Wimbledon. Masuako, Obiang, Carroll, Ogbonna, Hernandez, Adrian, Perez are not up to it.

Based on last night they are spot on.

Re: ⚽ Wolves v West Ham - Official Match Thread
From somewhere we have to find players with pace, sharpness and an ability to read the game without running around like headless chickens! There is no doubt that technically we have some good players but when you watch us and other sides on TV we are (and have been for some time) a slow side both mentally and physically.

When we try a hard high press we don't get there. I don't like Arnie waving his arms about but at times I could understand why because on occasions in recent months he would close down the keeper or defender and then look around and see no-one within 30 yards near him supporting. You then would have two or three in no mans land and once bypassed with one pass if Rice doesn't get there you have the opposition straight onto the two centre backs totally exposed.

There is no zip in any press we make it's plodding and half hearted and once our plodders are bypassed we don't have the quick legs or minds to get back. Wolves showed several times last night how they got back quickly into an organised shape and that's a team who also concedes goals so we have had a lesson in defending by a team that also ships goals and that's frightening.

Sadly we don't have players that have pace and can read a game although Rice is the closest we have and he is a 19 year old kid. You could argue the likes of Noble and Snodgrass can read a game but neither are the quickest whilst our fastest players the likes of Antonio and Masuaku cannot and switch off far too often and if you only have two or three out of position you are in trouble.

Whilst that's a blame on the players you also cannot play with two up top with our current squad. If your getting bypassed easily don't have Noble in a two or you will get slaughtered so the manager has to take responsibility. Not sure what he played last night but it looked at times like a 4222 where it looked like he was trying to tighten things up but we had headless chickens invading each others space, then other occasions it looked like a lightweight 442 where one pass would just rip us apart because we have too many ball watchers in the side.

It's almost as if the players don't know what to do, half want to push high with others wanting to drop off and it's becoming and absolute mess, the distance between forwards and defence is frighteningly big giving opposition teams so much space to play between.

How you solve it I haven't a clue with the current players but you need a couple of engines in the middle with Rice with also technical ability and a footballing brain for starters and they won't be easy to get.

Great turn out by the away mob, but we were as quiet as I can remember, basically because we couldn’t believe what we were witnessing. We were never in the match.

Bad as we were, it has to be said, Wolves were particularly good. They’ve played some cracking football at times this season, but their fans seem to think that was the best they’ve played. They were several classes above us in every department.

I’m still stunned, to be honest. And with theSulk’s injury, it made this a very bad night. Depressing.

Time to use kids, tell them not to worry, just learn and prove themselves.

You're taught how to defend at school and if you can't do it now all the coaching in the world wont change things.
How many more times are we going to hear that they've been working on defending set pieces all week.

Re: ⚽ Wolves v West Ham - Official Match Thread
Fuck Pellegrini looking cheesed off, just spend the next week introducing our defence to one another as they must sit at different tables at work and are only on nodding terms.

Then maybe introduce them to the concept of corners and how to defend them as they were obviously off school the day that got covered.

Maybe then go to the dwarf, wrestle his purse off of him and buy a division 2 left-back as he's bound to be better than the fucking headless chicken we've been playing there lately.
